GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

It doesn't seem right to me that the GBON can change their requirements without giving a time frame for students currently in the program to complete it. I called the GBON before starting Excelsior (July 7th, 2008) and they said that I could get licensure by endorsement. They didn't say there was a bill in the works.

I don't know how Georgia will deal with their nursing shortage. It will only get worse! I hope the people that passed this bill are in good health and that they don't expect to be in the hospital anytime soon. I am sure they didn't realize how the wording of the bill would affect thousands of nurses in the state of Georgia.

Excelsior should have something on their website letting prospective students know about the change. This bill wasn't made in a day and I have a hard time believing that they didn't know about it!

Well I guess it's better than not allowing endorsement at all. If that is the case though and they are going to start working with EC for a clinical component in those areas then I see no reason for them to not allow us to test for GA directly instead of having to apply for endorsement. Then again that would make too much sense. I have also heard many rumors that EC was aware that this change was in the works and apparently they didn't feel that it was important enough to notify us until after the fact.

snjoy- they don't want you to take a refresher course, they want you to complete an entire nursing program! As for agency most require that you have at LEAST a years experience as a practicing RN, also you have to be licensed in the state which you are working so that would exclude GA.

the board website says you have to have 3mos experience or take a refresher course.or work at the VA they will take you with a license from any state.

I encourage all of you that can attend that meeting to do so, so your voices will be heard. You all can share the points/concerns you wish to voice to the board, so you'll all be on the same page. Wear your scrubs, too. Good luck to you all.

we need to get previous grads to help us out with this .... :)

looks like we have a lot of work cut out for us. so is there any one here that is extremely talented and could type up a letter, let other review it. make suggestions, changes etc. once we have a very powerful letter than we could all sign it and send it snail mail and email.

you know like the kinds of letters that are sent to senators, govenors, etc.

thanks so much!

Probably would be better to send individually (even if we come up with a sample to do variations of). Big pile of mail on someone's desk will be much more of a squeaky wheel than one letter. Also would give them an idea of all the areas of the state that will be missing out on RNs.

sending in letters individually is what i was aiming for. just thought that some one could help draft one that had some experience in this type of thing.

i admit that i do not have the" gift" of writing such a letter!:(
