Is there anyone out there who is currently a GBCN student or who has been accepted and will be starting the program Fall '06? Would love to talk to anyone.

During orientation you will be introduced to the school and administrators. its kind of like a meet and greet. you will be given a tour around the whole college. you will have your mercer I.D. taken and given the option to register your vehicle (free) so you can get a parking permit. Mercer is pretty good about parking. The higher your senority though the more it seems to become an issue. Since many of you will be starting this year, most of your classes are early anyway so you dont have to worry. you will also be given a cubby for communications within the college. they give you little bags that have some goodies in them . the one i got had a lunchbag with the schools logo on it that i still use today. you will also learn about CPR if you dont already know about it. most of the undergraduate instructors that will be teaching your courses SHOULD be there. Then you are served a lunch. Also, the bookstore is right next to the axillary office so you can get your books if need be. The whole experience was pretty nice. This is when you start to learn about your classmates and make friends. Hope this helps

Hi,

I have also been accepted into the GBCN but I am in undecided what to do. I was also accepted to Clayton State (2yr BSN program) and NGCSU (2 yr ASN) program. I am worried about the cost of Mercer and the amount of time of the program. Do anyone one know about their financial aid and how does most students pay for there tuition. I have small kids so I don't want to worried about tuition? Can anyone give any advice about Mercer vs. the other programs? When you graduate does employers hire based on where you graduate from?

Well i have small children also. i am not going to say that you will not have any debt because you will. i get grants and scholarships, but i do have federal loans. the financial aid office does its best to help you pay for your education. They have many options for you to finance your education. just like a house, education is something that you have to put an investment in and watch it mature. i dont know about Clayton or other schools financial aid but of course you know that Mercer is private just like Emory so you have to make the decision on what works for you. if you have specific questions go ahead and call the FA office and tell them your concerns. the program is the same time as all of them it may be longer for some becuase this is a transfer program with less pre reqs but when people transfer they have pre reqs that are not required by the college so they may have been in college longer. I think it is discrimination and unethical for an employer to hire you based on where you graduated from but Piedmont Hospital and GBCN have a partnership that if you want to, you can get a scholarship and work for them after graduation. Everyone is pretty nice at Mercer just give them a call. hope this helps.

Anyone GBCN students (current or will be attending) subscribe to any nursing magazines?? What would you recommend? I heard these are really good and can even be used as a study guide for certain subjects? My tour guide told us which one she reads but I can not remember what the name of it was!

Hi Sandra -

I actually started subscribing to Nursing2006, American Journal of Nursing and Nursing Made Easy. You can get at least one or two of these fairly cheap online. Also, try ebay. I think I ordered two of the above on ebay and had great success in getting them cheap too.

Let me know if you know of any others that may be helpful!!

Great school. I graduated from their Diploma program back in '81. I thought about going back and getting my B.S.N. through their Fast Track program during the 90's, but didn't have the money or the time. Good luck to all who are entering!

Hey Yall,,, I worked in the same Hospital for 32yrs and believe me,, GA Baptist Nurses ARE the BEST!!! THey put out the most prepared for nursing I have ever seen.. They come to the floor and they know everything, Kennesaw nurses have never even inserted a cath..!!! If you choose Ga Bapt.. you have chose the best that you can be.!! I am not affliated with Ga. Baptist.. just worked with their grads for yrs and we never had to worry about them doing anything wrong!!!! They are GREAT NURSES!!!!

Wow weezer-thanks for that post! It makes me proud to be in new GBCN student nurse! With you saying that, I bet a lot is expected of us as we progress through the program (scares me in a good way, I'm up for a challenge) but it makes me feel good that when I'm done, I'll have a lot of experience! I've met some fellow students at orientation and during BLS training...and everyone seems so nice, thus far. I look forward to the experience.

GOODNESS, school starts MONDAY!!!!! I can't believe it's about to begin! :)

Honestly, I am glad you read the post I sent, I worked as LPN for long time, and the Ga Bapt. nurses really were the greatest... every time we hired one we automatically just knew it.. they get tons of on hands experience and that means so much more than the book theory. They always seemed very calm , collected and just knew what they were doing, no crying, nervous "New Nurse Jitters" They all seemed very Mature and seemed to love nursing. No complaints from any of them. I have worked with nurses that came from other schools that honestly had never inserted a cath. They thought nursing was sitting at the desk answering the phone with long false fingernails. They always got nervous when they had to call the Doctor about something, But not the Ga. Bapt. nurses they just grabbed the chart , called the Doctor took things in their own hands and never complained.!! THey are honestly the best that have ever been put out there.!!!I wish I could have gone there, but went to LPN school , had a family and just worked for yrs. Never got the chance to go back for R.N.

I am now 53, have arthritis and am not working. I absolutely love nursing, but seen the change over the yrs. Go for it,, you will be Great, especially at that school. Like I said, I do not work for them, have no connection to them . But if you like you could save this for one of your instructors when you get to know them.I think they would be proud the know that we always loved their nurses. And always knew we were getting the best. Good Luck.. Weezer

I'm a graduate of Piedmont School of Nursing (72) and Georgai Babtist was a great school then. I live in Michigan now but try to keep up with the nursing school changes. Everything that I've heard about the "New Georgia Babtist" program is wonderful. If you've choosen nursing as your profession this is a very good program to enter. Atlanta is a wonderful city to start your career and further your education. I'm presently working towards my Masters in Health Care Administration. With the present nursing shortage, my hopes are to eventually become a nurse educator. Enjoy the experience! I did!

Hi all,

As a Georgia Baptist Alumni I want to welcome you. I went to the old GBMC. Back then, it was just a diploma program. It was an all girls school and we lived in the dorm on Boulevard. We use to go to class in our pajama bottoms and slippers. LOL! That was back in the mid-eighties, alot has changed since then. The curriculum requires alot of study, but the instructors are wonderful and really care about their students. Some of the instructors I had when I went to GBMC are still teaching at Mercer. I have always been proud that I was a Georgia Baptist girl. Study hard-:mortarboard: but enjoy the journey. Some of the best times in my life were at Georgia Baptist.
