Hello!
My name is Dustin and I thought it would be a good idea to create a topic for those who are applying for the FY2020 Army Nurse board! A little about me; I am prior service Army enlisted with four years on active duty as a 19D (Cavalry Scout) and four years in the reserve as a 68W (Combat Medic). Recently, in December of last year I graduated with my BSN from a highly reputable school in Texas. In January of this year I started my new job in a Cardiothoracic and Transplant ICU, but in the process of applying to the 66H (Med-Surge Nurse) position with the Army. Per my recruiter, this is essentially the standard for nurses who have less than two years of RN experience and who will attend the Army’s Nurse Residency Program.
I’m hoping that my year of ICU experience and my CCRN certification at the time right before leaving for training will be an advantage to changing over to the Critical Care Nurse AOC (66S) as soon as I can. ? If it wasn’t for my yearning to return to the Army and wear the uniform again, I would just wait until I have over two years of civilian experience and apply to the 66S position. My desire to continue to serve is stronger than my AOC, 200%!
Please, use this to connect with others and share your experience! I look forward in embarking on this journey and hearing from others.

Thank you! Since you're further in the process than I am, what does "scroll release" mean exactly? I was told that my scroll was already approved awhile back when I was waiting for this waiver to clear, and now I have to wait for it's release? haha.
Oh I hav no idea LOL I never heard my recruiter say anything about a scroll. I was on the OML at first back in February, and then got picked up off the OML to commission. Maybe it just means that they are holding a spot for you, but had to wait until your waiver cleared? I didn’t need any waivers so I’m not sure how that works.

I had to sign a letter of intent on September 1st saying that I am still wanting to accept a commission and that I am only waiting for my appointment orders to do so. Today is the new FY, I am hoping my wait will end soon.
I had to do the same in August. I signed my letter of intent, and then a few weeks later I finally got my orders! Now I’m trying to get my PHA taken care of before I go to drill in November! I just bought a uniform today! LOL it’s been crazy! Especially since I’m not prior service. I bet you get your orders soon!
Glad to see the efforts to join the Army Nurse Corp as well as the other branches! 9 year Army Reservist myself. Started as a 66H and got lucky to get a slot for 66T school which I completed in 2018. Literally like 90 people across the Army do this program yearly.
Please if anyone has questions about going 66H to 66S/66T please don’t hesitate to ask. Someone said a recruiter guaranteed a spot that is completely untrue, it doesn’t happen.
Also have experience with getting on an FRST for those interested. Don’t hesitate to reach out!

I'm interested in how you got to do the 66T school! I wanted to go in for OR nurse, but they wouldn't take my experience in an outpatient GI lab as OR experience even though in the hospital I was at considered it surgical services. Anyway, I'm a 66H and have never worked a day in my career as a med surg nurse! I live in germany currently and was going to wait until we move back stateside to try to figure out how to change my AOC. I'm also wanting to go back to school for my FNP.

Honestly I’m not sure how my commander pulled off getting a slot he must have had connections or something. 2 of us somehow ended up going.

Anyone knows if Army in need of Rns right now? due to covid..
I guess I could only try for Med-Surg RN. Active Duty.
From my understanding, to Direct Commission the Army is not looking for experience in a nursing home setting. To be a med-surge nurse you must have at least 1-2 years experience on a med-surge floor.

Not True. I just commissioned as a med surg nurse and have NEVER worked on a med surg floor. I have worked in a GI lab and now as a school nurse. I would definitely just talk to an AMEDD recruiter and see what they say

An AMEDD recruiter would be the best to answer this question. From my understanding, the Army has a big board at the beginning of every FY which will usually complete the 66H (med surge) mission for the whole year. If that is true, you might be able to submit a packet to the October board, but it could be cutting it real close. You’ll need to start on it ASAP.
