I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

Okay thanks for the info. Well I may not be able to do this. I was diagnosed with GERD last year but I don't take the Pepcid I was prescribed. Bad I know..lol I also was dx with gallstones but have not had surgery, my symptoms are atypical basically. I did ask the recruiter if that would DQ me but haven't heard back. I didn't know about the GERD to ask about that.

Hey all, been reading this and other military nursing threads for a while. Regarding the physical, I'm assuming a torn ACL is a DQ? What if I were to get it repaired?

This seems to be a popular question. I found this answer to be most helpful. The best answer was answered by someone who was a recruiter and also worked at MEPS. Sounds as if some ACL tears make it in. The best thing you can do is speak with a recruiter. Even then, they don't always know. All they can do it send your paperwork to MEPS so the CMO can approve you or DQ you. The whole waiver process that he speaks of is pretty spot on. I am going through the waivering process right now. It's been long, but progress is being made.

If I have had a torn acl should you tell the recruiter, even if it doesn't bother you? - Yahoo! Answers

Thanks for the info! Really helped. I just got hired as an RN so I can't take off the time to get it repaired anytime soon. Maybe in about a year. I am very healthy and the knee doesn't bother me unless I do anything that requires any cutting movements, that's when I feel the instability. Hopefully the reconstruction can get me back to where I was pre-injury. That yahoo link was great

Yep. Just finished reapplying except for the interview.

Was the reapplication longer than the one we did? I want to reapply. I was told the deadline is this month end. Not sure why my recruiter did not know about this news until late, even after I asked him about it...I initially got the news from here. It is discouraging news but I am still intending to reapply. I wonder what would be the big differences between active duty and reserves....anyone?

You should be eligible to apply for the very next FQ board: September 2nd 2013. The waiting period is for those who were denied. If they select you, your COT date could be as soon as January. I am eligible to reapply and I am in the same boat that you're in: started the application in August 2012...decision in March 2013. I just finished my re-application (except for the stuff my references have to do...they switched to narrative letters instead of those forms for this cycle).[/quote']

How long is the waiting period for those denied? When you say denied, Is that the same as non-selected? Why would there be a waiting period for someone denied/non-selected and not an alternate who is also denied? I'm confused!!! :-/

Can someone please help me with a few questions. First a little history, I have an BS in Electrical Engineering and an MBA. I worked 17 years for the same company before I was laid off a few years ago. I have a really good. GPA 3.8 overall GPA and a 4.0 in science GPA. After my lay off I reached a crossroad in my life. Should I continue looking for an engineering job or switch to the health care field that I always dreamed of. My sister is a dentist and my mother was a pharmacist so I grew up with the medical bug. I will be applying to an accelerated BSN (1 year program 4 semesters) starting in May of 2014. I am in excellent health no aliments normal CBC, no motion problems, no surgeries etc.

I spent over 1500 hours volunteering a health care clinic for the uninsured. I even sat in on an autopsy with the famous Joshua Perper ( Ann Nicole Smith Pathologist).

My problem is my age. I am currently age 46 but by the time I graduate the accelerated BSN I will be 48. I contacted a medical recruiter who said as long as I was 48 I would be okay, no waiver needed. Once again, when I graduate I will be 48 and a half. I do not have extra time. That said, when should I start the paperwork? One recruiter said as soon as I was accepted in the Accelerated BSN program. With cutting it so close to the age limit I do not have much time to play with if you know what I mean. I guess what I am saying is delays could cost me my dream job. Any advice? Also, my income to debt ratio is low as i own both my home and car. Please advise. Do I have a chance?

Sorry for all the questions but I am a real planner. If I can maximize my benefit by minimizing my risk then I am good. Can I start the process when I get my acceptance? I will not need repayment for student loans as I saved enough money to cover the expenses. Does anyone know if I can get the ball rolling in advance so when I graduate I am ready for COT? I know I am a bit premature but father time is not on my side.

I do have the option of medical school and was accepted at a school in the islands. However I would rather give nursing a whirl first.

Bayern,

Actually, the reapplication is significantly shorter. Most of your packet, EXCEPT:the cover page, the "choice of assignments" form, the "I haven't done drugs" form, and your 3-5 references (which now must be narrative letters instead of those forms) is 100% re-usable. You also have to redo the interview. I knocked it out in a day with ease.

freedlyf,

There are 3 different decisions an applicant can receive: select, alternate#___ (you're given a rank in your specialty with this one), and non-select. Select means your will receive a commission in the air force. Alternates become 'selects' in the event that the selects can't participate, and they are called-up in order of rank. If an alternate is not 'picked-up,' he/she can immediately apply for the next board. Non-select is the same as a denial; my recruiter told me that the waiting period is 1 year for these people. The next part is purely speculation by me, but it seems to me that 'alternates' are people that they would hire if the funding was available; non-selects are people that they want more credentials/experience/etc from. Hopefully, that wasn't too harsh...
