I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

I asked my recruiter that same question today. The shutdown doesn't affect the number of selects, their bonuses or loan repayments, or the date of release for results...still October 21st.

How is everyone holding up waiting for board results?

Nervous as H-E-L-L! Just praying for the best for all of us on this thread!

I applied for a Health Services Administrator position and boy is it tough waiting. I am assuming that nurses and HSA's are selected at the same board Oct 1-4th.

Waiting is not fun! Recruiter called me today. He told me that the board has been meeting and the date is Oct 21!

I am curious/confused abt the physical expectations of officers. what do they expect us to do at the COT as far as physical is concerned? Run 3 miles per day? My recuiter is always asking me how much I weigh when he calls me every 2 wks. And how much do u guys weigh?

Hang in there everyone. Hopefully we are all selected and go to COT together in January! Bayern, I am 6 feet. 160 lbs. It sounds like the run is 50% of the PT well score and body composition, including weight is another 30%, so our ability to run/weight is important to pass the PT test.

I think if you can run 3 miles you will do fine in COT. The fitness test is 1.5 miles and how many push-ups and sit-ups you can do in 1 min. We will be expected to pass the fitness test during COT but with a little training beforehandit should not be that hard. Here is alink for the min. requirements to pass:

I was prior enlisted and I went to BMT in 2002. PT was not that challenging, but they have gotten more focused on fitness standards since then

Thank you guys. I saw the standards. I think I would be fine. I am 5' 8" and the last time I checked I was 158. I think we would have enough time to prep on working out before January. It would be great when we finally meet at COT. Would be interesting to put these ids here to faces.

Besides fitness I wonder what other ways we can prepare for COT? I am sure that learning land navigation and bruising up on drill and ceremony is a good idea. I wish or recruiters could give us updates on the board before the 21st.!

I don't know much about preparing for COT, but there were some things I wish I would have known when I went to Air Force basic training years ago.

Knowing the rank system is a definite need to know. For example, a Staff Sergeant is an E-5 and learn to recognize the insignia. You'll need to know enlisted and officer.

Looking into Air Force customs and courtesies will be beneficial.

I always wished my enlisted recruiter would have went over military drill/marching with me. We did a lot of marching in basic training, not sure about COT though.

I agree with the above post...reviewing rank, customs and courtesies would be a good idea

One thing that I am worried about is the rope course. I am terrified of heights :nailbiting: I am not sure how to prepare for that

Is everyone hoping for a January COT date? I am hoping to go in March.
