FSW Fall 2015

Published

Florida Southwestern State College formerly Edison State College. I started thread for FSW but it is full with spring applicants. So I decided to start a new one for this upcoming fall.

Who is joining me next fall in nursing?

I plan to apply for Part-time or Lee full time. I have one more semester of pre-requisites. I am taking A&P 1, Micro, College Algebra and Nutrition. Kill me now. :arghh: lol A full time semester of craziness but almost done after that hopefully with pre-requisites with the exemption of A&P 2 and a humanities class.

I plan to take the Hesi in mid Feb or march and retake if needed at the end of April. Schedule has been posted and I plan to study a lot this winter break. So excited but so nervous.

Are we there yet?!

I received this yesterday from the Program Director in response to my question through NUC-1000(collier)

HelloCharlene,

You do not have to join a class on NUC-1000, the Faculty will put you into a group later. Right now you just need to be enrolled on the site for communication purposes - Announcements for updates, schedules, etc.

Once I have assured that Certified Tracker is up and ready for uploads of documents and the Virtual Orientation is ready to launch I will contact the new students coming in.

Thank you! It is a little crazy on this end!

Professor B W (i don't think we can type full names. There is only one director with those initials anyway)

I feel better now knowing that although the deadline is tomorrow I just have to wait. I handed all my papers in to Edna and scanned my Health report, shot card, and BLS card. Gonna wait till tomorrow(Friday) for books because of the zero tax for back to school.I will Save about 29.00 $$ for all the required books. (that is 3/4 of a tank of gas for me )

New email from our Director.

She said:

Do not bring in or send in your Health Record, Immunizations, or Attestations unless explicitly specified in your Acceptance Packet.

well my check off list states that the form(health)has to be returned to the Collier Nursing Office no later than Aug 7th. :sniff: Gave mine to Edna(former Nursing Assistant)I gave her Hlth record, shot record and copy of BLS :wacky: the immunization forms just stated download. I only gave because certified profile not working and deadline near. Guess I will have to get back.:wacky:

I turned those in also except for the attest form 😐

I still need to get my bucs card.

I had one of the professors of Nursing put it in sandras office since she wasn't there. I'm not all that comfortable with walking in someone's office when they're not there. Lol

Anyway, she said eventually they will need all those health forms in the office when we start clinicals, so it wasn't bad that I turned them in.

However, I didn't turn in the attestation form because the original packet doesn't say too.

Just a heads up! I thought I would be smooth and wear my teal nursing polo for my Bucs card picture and the back drop was nearly the same color so it came out white and looks like I have a floating head!

Hey guys,

Congrats to all who got in and those who haven't, keep your head up! I got through my first semester at the Charlotte campus so if you guys have any questions feel free to ask. I used to lurk on here all the time to get all the info I was looking for so I want to return the favor.

Good luck to all of you!

Christine

This made me LOL

What hospital module test on canvas? This is the first I hear about this. Lol

Maybe it's just Charlotte Campus? There are 3 hospitals where we might do clinicals. Each hospital module has the hospitals orientation packet and then we have to take the test for it and submit it on Canvas.

That is freaking hilarious! That kind of stuff usually happens to me! :)

That's great! Thank you! I start at Charlotte in a couple weeks. I was wondering what people normally wear to class. Also, how strict are they on shoes? If the shoes are white and have a tiny silver logo, is that a no go? Do we have to buy a lab kit, or will they provide us the stuff (like cath kits and such). Did you hear anything about long socks (someone on here was talking about long socks for labs or something)? Do we have any choice for our clinicals? When we do clinicals, is there any place to lock up our stuff? What do you think the first semester essentials to buy are? Can you buy any lab jacket as long as it's 3/4 length or full length with logo? Is there something you wish someone would've told you before you started? Do they allow you to record lectures? I just bombarded you, so I'll stop now! :) Thank you! Good luck to you in your second semester!

On normal lab days we wear our polos (White, Maui blue or now Purple) with white scrubs bottoms or khaki pants. On Clinical days we wore our clinical uniform (your whites). The shoes for in class lab days are suppose to be white, but our campus (Charlotte) were pretty lenient so we had people wear brown shoes or black sneakers. For Clinicals, as long as it isn't like a mesh material where blood can stain it, you are fine. If you can wipe your sneakers off easily, you are in the clear. A tiny silver logo should be fine. They provided us with a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope, tuning fork and reflex hammer in a fanny pack they gave us in the beginning of the semester. They do have cath kits available for you to practice when the time comes for the sterile technique skills test (you will either get tested on a inserting a foley or trach suctioning, so you will also be able to take home a suction kit too.) The socks for clinicals should be white and high to protect your skin if fluids are to spill on you. On lab days I wore ankle socks. I think you guys have one day where it is just lecture. On that day you can wear regular clothes. For clinicals you will need a zipper binder to protect your paperwork and if you want you can bring your own lunch. The only storage place they had for our food and binders in the nursing home was in a cabinet in the break room and in the hospital we left it on the counter in the break room. So basically if you have anything you think is important, you should leave it locked in your car. No choice in clinicals, they pick the place for you but supposedly we will get to experience a different hospital every semester.

My essentials were kept to a minimum. I did everything on my laptop so I didn't use much paper like my classmates did. I would recommend a better stethoscope because the one that they give you isn't that great. I would buy 2 clinical uniforms because if you are like me and a couple of others you might accidentally leave a pen in your pocket and have it explode all over :) lol I would get a pocket sized medication book for clinicals. Also a nice watch with a seconds hand and a planner!

I thought the lab coats were suppose to be what the school requested but a lot of my classmates had different ones with the logo and no one ever said anything. So as long as they are white and have the logo I think you should be fine (the one I first ordered fell to the bottom of my calf so I am ordering a new one that falls a little past my hips.)

Don't be surprised to be sitting in a couple of classes and thinking wth?! LOL This happened to a lot of us and something there isn't enough time to go through everything so there will be times you and your classmates are trying to figure things out on your own. This is not to say that your professor won't help you. But do not be surprised if they answer you back with "maybe you should look that up." However with that said, there will be nursing tutors available to you guys. I'm the Vice President of the SNA and we will be coming into your class on your first day to talk to you guys more about it. Sometimes things seem disorganized. Some professors allowed us to record but there was one who didn't want us to.

If you have more I'm here so don't feel bad. I know I had a lot of questions in the beginning but I can't even remember half of them to offer some advice.
