Is there anyone planning to apply for FSCJ's Summer 2011 RN program? I am taking A&PI and II next semester with Human Growth and Dev. and Sociology, then I'll apply. I am taking Microbiology during the spring prior to going into the program. I am taking the Nat in September after Chem 1032. What about you?
K nurse, What department are you going to be working in? Your going to be a PCT, right? Do you have prior experience? Is it full-time? Please explain the internship program. I'm not really sure what it is. Sorry about all of the questions, but I was just discussing (with my hubby) getting a job at a hospital a few weeks ago, but wasn't sure if the load would be too demanding with school/kids/husband! lol. I am however worried about getting a job with the way things are for new nurses at the moment. So it would be nice to get my foot in the door somewhere.

Yes, Ill be working full time as a PCT till school starts, in Med/Surg. I have a little bit of experience.
The best that I can understand the program, if you get accepted you do specialty clinical rotations at Mayo in whatever area you choose. I dont know how many they accept, and i dont think it guarantees you a job w/ them after you graduate. If you go on their website under the education tab, it explains everything. Im a bit worried about balancing working, school and my family but Id be stupid not to take this job. I need to work to help with expenses and I want them to keep me on after graduation.
That's awesome! I've thought about applying at some local hospitals and seeing what happens, but am honestly scared that it will be too much. We could use the extra income around here too. Unfortunately, I don't have any family that could help with the kids and my husband's work schedule is wacky so it would be very hard to plan 12 hour shifts around his 12 hour shifts. He works 5 days on and then 5 days off.
I heard that nurses graduating from FSCJ's program were having a hard time finding jobs because employers preferred to hire nurses that have BSN's and leadership skills. Heard anything about that? Something about FSCJ being sued because they were pumping out too many nurses and non of them were getting hired. I guess people were hoping to land a job day 1 after graduating, working the required hours, and then going back to FSCJ for the BSN program. Instead, they graduated and ended up not having a job or attaining their goals for a BSN.
I guess with the way the economy is an employer can justify paying a BSN graduate the same as an ADSN graduate. So students from schools like JU and UNF get snatched up first. Which is why, i was told, that FSCJ students were not get any jobs.
Anyone else hear about this?

I have heard that some hospitals (Baptist is the one that I have heard about) are only hiring nurses with BSN's. It's not impossible to get a job with your ADSN, it just may not be the job that you want. I'm ok with whatever happens when I get out of the program. I plan on going right back into school afterwards for my BSN, even if it's only part-time. There are plenty of other colleges that you can continue your education at, that do not require you to have work experience.
I agree your first job isn't going to be your dream job, whatever gets me the experience and a pay check ill be ok with. I plan on going straight back to school and getting my BSN as well so im not worried about it. If anything ill just go to a school that doesn't require the hours and finish my BSN then look for a job. People just have to understand what is and is not available to them with the degree that they are getting.
