FSCJ Fall 2011 Accepted

Published

I figured I would go ahead and start a new thread. Maybe we can help each other get through these next couple months of scrambling around.

For now....let's just celebrate!!!!:yeah::up:

:nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse::nurse:

Hi guys. Someone commented on the AN hopefuls fall 2011 that the cutoff was 199.8....how is that possible? A person from St. John's county got in with 194 I thought. Maybe they allow for so many people (with the highest scores) from other counties???

Does anyone else think we should change the name of the facebook page to FSCJ Nursing Class Fall 2012.....or something like that but shorter? Just thought we should specify the class or something so other students aren't joining thinking it's for all FSCJ nursing students.

I was able to change the group name, but FB wont let me change the page name. :(

While I was going through the old posts on allnurses, someone posted the contents from the skill kit. This is from a year ago so it could or couldn't be accurate but it's probably very similar to what we will be purchasing. I'm just posting it because someone was inquiring about it on our facebook page=)

Congrats to everyone who is still shaking when they read (and reread... and reread again) that they were accepted! Got in on days with my super awesome study buddy. Titers have been done for 3 weeks, drug screen done today, fingerprints/background and picture done tomorrow, physical getting done Wednesday. Just one question for anyone who may know. Can we decline the flu shots?

Also, for anyone who is looking for CPR, if you click on the link from the schools RN requirements page (under the programs of study section) it will link to the AHA. Their are people who do classes through AHA from their homes that are around $40. I did mine in May, was able to schedule it 2 days in advance, had my card ASAP, and their was only one other person in my class, so it went super quick (we were both recerts).

Remember to breathe!!! This is the easy part!:lol2:

Hello Nurses!!! I see that most of us are now getting the requirements knocked out left and right (go us!!) but I wanted to share some of the tips I have learned from working in the field that may help anyone who is unsure or panicking. (Anyone else who has experience, please share too!) Hope it is helpful!!

Watches- make sure it is waterproof and make sure it has a second hand (I made the mistake of finding a super cute fossil and bought it... it was digital... and had a flower flash each second instead of a number.) If it has the date on the face too, it is super helpful because sometimes the days run together. Also, choose the material for the band carefully. Leather and rubber tend to be tighter and will hold water on the skin, plus they are normally a strap style band, and the excess piece can get caught on stuff.

Make yourself an emergency kit- Have a complete extra set of clothes, complete with socks, undies, bra, and shoes in your car*. If you car pool, take it with you. You never know when you will spill something, it will pour rain, or a bra strap or shoe sole will give out. Also include: Asprin, Excedrin, Midol, Aleve, Tylenol, or your pain reliever of choice (travel size are great for room savers); some sort of daytime cold/sinus reliever; cough drops; feminine hygene products, small sewing kit, kleenex, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes for hard surfaces, shoe laces, hair ties, bobby pins, nail clippers and file, q-tips, cotton balls, tooth brush, tooth paste and floss, moleskin, bandaids in various sizes, deodorant, extra prescription medication you are taking, contact solution, extra contacts, glasses, small container of hairspray (it will remove ink form most things), a few bottles of water, and some sort of nonparishable snacks (I prefer peanut butter crackers as they are filling enough and can get the blood sugar up pretty quick)

Invest in good hand lotion. For winter, switch to body butter or a really thick cream. Make sure it does not have a strong fragrance. Keep a travel bottle with you all the time. Have a backup ready.

Chapstick is your friend. Again, keep it with you all the time and have backups.

Get a pack of fine tip sharpies. Black is great, but the multi color pack will come in handy too. They work great for writing on all sorts of surfaces that a regular pen won't work on, including certain specimen collection containers. Also, a regular black sharpie or other permenant marker is handy.

Most of the stuff you already have at home, and the small ziploc bags are awesome for this. If you don't, pair up with classmates and split the cost. Remember, its an emergency kit so you only need enough to last through one emergency at a time. Oh, and as far as the extra set of clothes, go cheap. They do have very inexpensive white scrubs out there. Your extra shoes don't neccessarly need to be comfortable or cute, they are a back up. Sports bras and tankies also provide extra coverage and comfort. An cute beach bag, reuseable shopping bag, or large purse can probably hold most of this stuff, excluding the shoes.

The last thing I can think of is a pocket sized notepad. This came in handy for two things 1) a cheat sheet- I put ranges for vitals based on age in the front, spellings for certain words (I CANNOT spell) and abreviations for medication in the front 2) mind clearer- I have ADD and found that if I write down what my mind wanders to, I can focus on what I am supposed to easier. I write it down in the back of the notepad so its not on the margins of my lecture notes.

Hope this was helpful and not overwhelming to you all!!:uhoh3:

I have a question, after looking into the total cost of everything, and factoring in my existing bills, I don't think that I am going to be able to afford to go this semester, considering there's almost a thousand dollars worth of expenses in the next month and a half. I plan to reapply for spring, after I have had time to save some money. The problem is, I have already called to accept my seat. Can I just call back and decline it, even though I have accepted it already? Also, will declining my seat hurt my chances of getting in next time?

Hi Mindy:)

I think you should call and speak to someone. I do think you can still decline and I don't think it will hurt your chances.

Good luck!

S

You must write a letter declining conditional acceptance and when you wish to be considered again (last paragraph of your letter) so that you can be eligible for consideration at a later date. Good luck

I did read that last paragraph, but I wasn't sure if that was only if I couldn't attend orientation, or if that was for all who decline, but I probably will write a letter just to be safe. I emailed "CJ" and called, still waiting for a response. I am terribly disappointed. :cry:

keep your head up...at least now you know what to expect next semester

Remember: the Dollar store is your friend. Replaced almost everything (except clothes), got some new notebooks and some paper for less than $20 at Dollar Tree this afternoon!!

has anyone gone to NS Medical Clinic yet? I just called and was told the titer's results take a week! is this true? if so, that means we all have to go see them by this Friday, July 15th in order to have our results available by next Friday, July 22nd...now I am officially freaking out!

-NJ

When I called NS Med Clinic they said that you don't have to turn in the results. They said you only have to turn in the medical form to show it has been completed. She said if there is any issues with your titers then you would need to return for the immunizations before the program begins (Aug 29).

Hope that helps cuz I was worried about the same thing until I called. :nurse:
