Frustration & No RN Job Opportunities

Published

I am so frustrated with not being able to find a RN position. I live in the philly area... I have applied to every hospital I can think of... I decided to make some calls to follow up on my application status and i get the ususal Nurse Recruiter answer machine stating" Please leave a detail message; your call is important to me and I will return your call asap". also I call HR and they bascially say to wait for someone to contact you." I guess i am just venting... I know that I am not the only RN grad looking and waiting to jumpstart my career. BUT Boy it's frustrating as well.... Any advice?:uhoh3:

THERE NEVER WAS A SHORTAGE!
And yet, even here on AN, I continue to "hear" various permutations of the "shortage" myth.

It's not just the hospitals and the nursing schools who are pushing this malarky... many nurses continue to insist that there IS a shortage and many more, while admitting that there is no present shortage, continue to insist that one in imminent.

Pray, i am in the same boat, still have to write resume, rates are horrible, less than lpn status, what is up with that.

I feel everyone's pain. I'm over in California. I graduated from a BSN program in December 09. Made Summa Cum Laude. Passed the boards and received my license in Janurary 10. I've sent out probably 30+ applications since then and haven't even gotten a single interview!! My mother is a RN, has worked at a hospital for 40+ years and she can't even get me a job. I've tried to volunteer at the hospital I did my preceptorship at and they don't even have any volunteer positions open. I'm loosing my mind. I'm starting to seriously regret quitting my decently paying yet not so satisfying job to go back to school to become a RN. At this point, I'm left with two bachelor degrees, a huge student loan, no job, no income. It's really frustrating seeing all those open RNII positions and hearing the hospitals complain that there aren't enough nurses. HELLO?!?!?! There are plenty of nurses out there ready and willing to work, just give us a chance!!

This is horrible, i have 2 associates, one in hematology tech., and now rn, 2 lic. and no job yet.

I am also frustrated of being jobless. How can a new grad get experieces if no one hires us?

I know exactly how you guys feel about the job market. I was in same situation until I decided to leave NJ. The only solution is to move out of state. The recession is only making it worse because people are losing their jobs and they are going into nursing as a second career because of they of the "shortage" which is only making the market overly saturated with new grads. Good luck.

I am in school right now and this is not encouraging at all. I wonder if I should just stop. Most of my classmates work in hospitals already and they tell me they have guaranteed employment once they are done. I wonder what will become of me who has no prior nursing experience and no job!!!!

Volunteer at a local hospital/nursing home...apply for NA jobs (if you've completed NUR 1)..get involved, and network, network, network! :) That's the best advice I could give.

Where in California? There is a government hospital in my area that has continous RN1 opening.

What government hospital is it? I live in Southern Cal and unable to find a job but I am willing to relocate.

Bariq, I too am a new RN graduate in NY. I have applied to numerous hospitals, craiglist, monster, checked out agencies, I am going to an upcoming jobfair from Spectrum so I am hoping that it turns around. Have you tried job fairs, aftercollege.com, indeed.comor any other options that I have suggested. I know it is totally frustrating and to top it off most of the postings i see are too far for me. i also have a school age child and I can't just pick up and relocate. i don't know your situation but I do know that what goes up must come down and what comes down must go back up. Good Luck and i will post my status updates as they change.

I even attended a job fair in March 3 and till same story. Can somebody tell me what to do. To crown it all, my husband has been laid off and l have two kids 5 and 3 years to care for.
