*Venting!!!*
So there are only a couple of weeks left of this semester of my microbiology class, but I feel like the hardest part of dealing with the class has been the students more so then the actual class.
There are about 20 students total in the class but there are about 7 students who have been really getting under my skin. These specific students literally expect our professor to sit down next to them during the exam and guide their hands to writing down the correct answers. It like they absolutely refuse to learn anything. While our professor is lecturing they will stop her and ask her if it will be on the exam...
if she answers yes, then they will ask her how it will be worded as a question on the exam, and she usually get frustrated and states that she isn't sure or she hasn't thought about it yet. Then they argue with her and tell her that she is making the class too difficult, and how are they supposed to get the answers right if she won't tell them what they are.
if she answers no, then they ask her why is she going over the concept if they aren't going to have an exam over it.
My professor always lets us know what to expect on every exam, what to focus on, what concepts to review, what vocab to memorize. No she doesn't tell us specific questions that are gonna be on the exam but if you study and focus on the things she tells you too then there is no reason you cannot do well on the exam. I have an A and several others in my class have an A or a B, So obviously she isn't teaching as bad as they are trying to make it seem she is.
It all came to a climax last night in class when a student asked our professor about one of the questions on the exam, the student stated she was frustrated because of the way the question was worded, our professor then pulled up the power point slide and pointed out where the answer to this question was in the notes she gave all of us, but the student stated that she didn't see how she was supposed to associate the answer with question because in the notes the answer was with a different bullet point then where the teacher had made up the question.
In other words the notes looked like this:
And the question was something like this:
John Doe created an invention first used in 1822, he made it completely out of what?
Our professor was so frustrated, she stated that if you study there is no way you miss the question but that student and several others jumped on her about how she is setting them up for failure. So she asked us what do we think she should do, one student suggested letting us use a note card for the final exam, our professor broke down and told us to go ahead and use as many note cards as we want. Of course this satisfied the upset students. I was happy though when one student did stand up for the professor and let the class know that she has been doing a good job teaching the class. I just wonder how these students are going to react when/if they do get into nursing school, because, at least from what I have been reading on this site, you have to actually study to do well.
Sorry, just needed to vent lol
Am I wrong? What do you guys think about this? Anyone ever experience this before? How did you deal?
Thanks!

Just going to say it I have a feeling your professor is going to make your next test really hard since she is allowing note cards.

I don't know how to tell you to deal with this, sorry. But, it is your professor's fault for allowing the behavior to continue. If I were the professor, I would have tolerated these kinda of questions and comments once, maybe twice, before I started telling people they can get the heck out of my class. I would tell everyone that they could save all questions for the end of class after I was done lecturing. When asked if content will be on the exam, I would kindly answer "I do not discuss content that is not important, and I am not in the habit of giving students the questions they will tested over. If you have a problem with that, you are more than welcome to drop my class." Professors shouldn't let entitled students control their class.
Sorry you are dealing with this.
Yeah, I am expecting a monster of a final exam....

Exactly!
I feel bad for her, she did let us know that this was first time she taught a class at a community college and I think she is just trying to stay on everyone's good side.
But you know what the kicker is, these students who do all the complaining are the same ones who either
A.Talk amongst themselves during her lectures
or
B. Arrive late to class, leave early or don't show up for class at all.
Great way to learn people

It really sounds like the instructor needs to develop a stronger backbone. Some students are like wolves... they smell fear and they pounce. The more they think they can get away with they will.
I just realized I kind of sound like I am blaming the students' behavior on the instructor... The instructor does need a stronger backbone, but students like that? I can't stand them either. They disrupt everyone who is actually trying to learn.

Wow, that IS frustrating! I really wish your professor hadn't given in. All that leads to is undeserving people getting a spot in the nursing program, just to realize that the nursing school professors aren't going to care if they think the class is too hard. It would be even more frustrating if they end up taking the spot of someone who actually WANTS to do the work, just for them to turn around a drop out or fail out of the program.
I don't think there's much you can do about them, just feel good that you've been doing well in the class without whining or receiving any special treatment! That's more than they'll be able to say!

And if they are able to get into the same nursing class as I am in....I don't think I will be able to be as quiet as I was this semester lol

I'm currently taking Microbiology as well and lucky to have an amazing professor who really narrows down the information we need to know and gives us notes to study from for his exams. Although there is quite a bit of info, anyone who study's from his notes and listen to his lectures will do well. However, there are a hand full of complainers in my class who are all borderline passing that complains the class and exams are hard. They are also the ones who don't bother to study or thinks that reading the notes the night before the exam is sufficient studying...drives me crazy hearing them complain. Our professor is so sweet and lenient, they are just taking advantage of him.

Wow. I wish I had your professor when I took micro the first time. They would've DIED if they had the professor I had! OMG he was horrible. His tests were pages & pages long & he wouldn't go over them. He didn't tell you what would be on the test.
I am sorry you're dealing with people like that. If they get into nursing school, it will be a rude awakening. There are no note cards during tests. But your professor should've shut them up or kicked them out.
