Frustrated by the employment websites.

Published

I've been looking for a LVN job that would be open to a new grad.

Few and far between.

I've had ZERO online jobs pan out. Not even a call. I've sent personalized cover letters with my resume and read all the tips online..and still nada.

But I'm really frustrated.... out of say 9 pages of openings...5 of them are from the same home health agencies.. it's just the same listing over and over w/ the location being different.

No agency or home health organization will touch us new grads without a year experience.

I just don't get why they can't just list it a few times....but not like 75!

Takes up time to wade through them.

AGGGH! This job searching is driving me nuts!

What part of the country are you in? Maybe someone here could help better if you can share that (not exactly if you're not comfortable with that :)).

I've had interesting experiences with online third-party job sites. I think they scout legitimate employer ads and repost them on their own sites. You think you are applying for a job (which may even have been filled) but they are just getting your information. Then they bombard you with emails about "job opportunities".

I started sending those emails to the spam file and applied only to employers' own websites. No third-party postings, like jobs.com, etc.

You might try some old-fashioned job hunting. Put on your interview clothes with resume in tow and try walking in to some places off the street and asking if there is anyone you can talk to. It'll at least get you out of the house and give you a break from cyber-limbo. Good luck!

Can you go to advanced search and then list all the criteria you need? I never use generalised searching as you get a million jobs come up - and I want specific criteria.

What about trying nursing agencies?

I became very frustrated with online job postings. Try going to company sites. I also checked VA and gov.sites Hope this helps!!

I am suggesting old school here:-)

The best jobs I have had, including as a new grad , were when I had in hand an application, resume, and any references

from nursing instructors perhaps, or other nurses I did clinical with.

The main focus is going in person, being friendly positive and professional and looking that way too.

Being one of many - a blur - of emails and online applications/resumes will not help you get that job.

Go to the places that you would like to work, even if they are not putting it out there in ads or their websites.

Never know what will happen tomorrow...or even right before you walked in.

Second thing I suggest is......see yourself working in your job. See it as if it already happened! :nurse:

It is tough for everybody right now, but hang in there. Don't give up. Have an open mind to other opportunities you might not consider before. A lot of people are going through same as you are right now. Remember that you are not alone. Don't give up.

I'm not sure how reliable I find employment websites unless it's directly with the employer. Honestly I've had more call backs and landed my first job driving out to places filling out resumes etc. My first job (Skilled LTC facility) I filled out the application, interviewed, and was hired in the same day and worked there for 18 months. I think I might have gotten 1 call from an online resume and I know mine is bouncing around on jobs.com, monster, and a few others at least and that's in the past 4 years or so that I've been using those sites.

A few tips.

Join Linkedin & join some nursing groups. Use it to network with those you may know, but lost touch with. Post your resume there & on monster, etc

Some searches will let you you the NOT function. For example RN NOT Handy Homecare in order to eliminate the redundant entries

And of course apply for anything that say "experience preferred"

Good luck.
