Frustrated/ Don't know what to do

U.S.A. Alabama

Hi,

Here's my story. I'm currently a LPN and am trying desperately to get into a bridge program from whatever school will accept me. I'm finished with all core/pre requisite classes but the thing is I didn't do so well in A & P I/II. I got a C in each lecture and a B in each lab, which labs really don't matter when it comes to being admitted. I took both of them over and was 2 points away from a B. I'm just not good with science or math but that's another story altogether and I don't want to speak anymore negativity into the atmosphere. I have applied here in GA to the school that I've gone to for the longest twice and was denied :crying2: but that was without Micro. I have now completed Micro and am awaiting my grade which I know is an A but wont help much with the points system which is what most schools in ALA use.

I'm relocating to Huntsville within the next month but I haven't been accepted to Calhoun Community College yet and I'm remaining hopeful. My frustration comes from the fact that here in GA when entering school a compass exam is necessary. Well, I took the compass and was placed in learning support math 97 and had to complete 97 and 98, then College Alg. I was so concerned about doing well in math because I had to retake the compass that I only took 1 other class with math so that was a total of 3 semesters of math basically. I'm saying all that to say that my compass is about to expire and I haven't been accepted into a nursing program yet. So I have all the strikes against me:mad:: the fact that my compass is about to expire, my grades aren't good in the one area that matters most and I haven't been accepted to a nursing program yet. I don't know if I should just stop proceeding with nursing and go in another direction or what. My chances are sort of slim if you take the points system into consideration.

Has anyone experienced anything of this nature ever? Or know of anyone that hasn't had straight A's or B's to get accepted into Calhoun?

Signed,

Totally Frustated and Confused.

Congrats on the A in micro! That should help you out :) As far as the A&P grades go, is there any way you could retake those before reapplying to Calhoun?

Calhoun doesn't use the Compass scores anymore. They use TEAS scores now, so if your compass is about to expire, I would try taking the TEAS test and see how you do.

I'm sorry you're discouraged, but I hope you continue on to reach your goal. Hang in there!! Good luck & best wishes!

I have retaken them both and I contacted CCC and was told that the number of times a science is taken is taken into consideration as well. I just can't see myself taking each of them over, that'll be 3 times each. Also, now since you say that CCC doesn't use points from the compass doesn't do me much good either because I scored a 97 on the English, which is what schools in GA that use the points system go by. So in other words that would mean 97 points for me. Uggh!! I don't know what other route to take at this point. I guess it wont hurt to still apply which I'm doing anyway.

I'm sorry :( That's a really tough situation.

Have you scheduled a time to take the TEAS test? I've heard that it really isn't bad! There's also online study guides and questions for it to help you. You can find out more information about the test by going to the CCC link here.

No, I actually haven't scheduled a time yet. I was waiting on the school that I was going to attend before I actually take it, but I am going to start studying for it.

I understand completely! 2 years ago I was trying to get into nursing school at UAB and Jefferson State Community College. JSCC was actually HARDER and had more strict rules for getting in. I had an 89 in Anat. but because they used the same point system it was awarded a 3 because it was a B. Which I didn't understand, because an 89 is different than a 79.9. I also had to take the compass exam and even though it was in the high 90s, had A's and B's, and 2 other degrees already, I was told I would never get into their school. This is an Associates degree program not Bachelor's. Not knocking any Associate degree nurses, just complaining about the "poo" I had to go through.

However, I was determined to go to nursing school. I applied 2x at UAB and was finally accepted and I graduated with a BSN this past May and passed my boards a month ago.

What I'm trying to say is, don't let that discourage you. I would apply to University of Alabama in Huntsville. If it's like UAB they just want a 70 average.

Keep your chin up and don't give up. There's a plan for you, just be patient! :p

Can you tell me if UAB has a nursing bridge program? I would really like to bridge since I'm already an LPN, I think that would be easier for me.

UAB does not have a bridge program for LPNs unfortunately. I actually graduated with a lady who was a former LPN. Here's another question for you: What are your future plans and goals? Like do you want to continue your education like MSN, Nurse Practioner etc...? If you are, then you need to go the route of a BSN, RN. Otherwise if you only have an Associates and want to further your education, you would have to do 1 yr of an RN mobility program to get your BSN, then onto whatever you would like to do. That's an extra year of your time, money and headaches to go through. I'll see what else I can find out for you :).

Check out: www.snead.edu They have an online LPN-RN mobility program. Look at the program information. This may be an option.

Hello,

I am from Houston Texas and was interested in finding out more about UAB. I already have a Bachelors degree. I've been trying to get accepted into Nursing school for some time now and refuse to give up. What were some of the questions they asked during your interview? How many volunteer hours did you have? What were they looking for in your admission essay? How are the teachers (were they supportive) and campus life? What are some good areas to live in while going to school? Is Chemistry II a required course?

Thanks for your help. I'm glad I came across this post!

Specializes in ICU and Peds.

UAH uses GPA not a point system. Also must take a per HESI which almost all nursing schools in the state have started using, even Calhoun. I graduated from UAH, had a job prior to graduation, and moved up quickly at my hospital. The program was difficult at times but my teachers were also willing to work with me. Enjoyed almost all my instructors and clinical instructors. I went to the school before I applied and discussed my chances of being accepted. Sometimes it's good to go meet the people (or call) an see what they can tell you. They are pretty up front with you.

I have just applied for UAH fall 2013 nursing program, I have a 3.3 GPA and 5 years work experience in a doctors office and group home. I have 120 hrs volunteer work at a nursing home, do you think I will get in ?
