Fresno City College Fall 2021/Spring 2022

Starting a thread for applicants in 2021 year.

I know private colleges are expensive, but as long as I can get into any nursing program, I am willing to take a loan. It’s just so hard to get in anywhere.

Ya I’m not willing to take a loan for tuition only for living expenses. I also just can’t sleep at night paying $30k+ for a 2 year or less program when my 6 years at Fresno state in totality with books and fees was ~60k. It’s hard to justify leaving my job to go that much in debt.

I understand. I was thinking like this until my nurse relative told me to apply any programs because it’s so competitive. I don’t want to fiend for years to wait for the lottery.  I think I can work more to pay off student loans.

It’s true but you take a risk assuming you’re health will remain intact for the time that takes. My friend’s son recently injured his arm while working as CNA (he ran to catch and elderly lady at the nursing home he was working in) and is now on disability. His arm will never function normally again.

I've been seeing more and more community colleges selecting people based on a mix of lottery and competition. I think it was Bakersfield Community College and Cuesta College (in San Luis Obispo) that are doing 75% points and 25% lottery. Makes me wonder if Fresno City will start using the multi criteria for selection in the future, and not so much as a screening process.

If I could relocate instead of take out loans, I 100% would.

Merced does something like that.

In the Allied Heath Club meeting when we had --------------- present on how the lotto works and were able to ask questions she did say they may make the points required to get into lotto higher with how many applicants they get.

Woah, if that’s the case I really wish I knew the point criteria! How many points are given to sciences and non sciences? I think I had a 3.7 science and like a 3.5 non science

Honestly if you meet the criteria for the most part you meet the point threshold. I guess there are some weird cases where you can have the GPA but a C in a science class can screw you up, but I didn’t really count my points or anything.

I'd be curious to know how much higher they make the point cutoff. Suppose they raise it to 60 or higher. I'm curious if these people who have been waiting years are doing so because their points are right around 50 and they keep raising cutoff which makes them ineligible year after year.....

In a way I hope they do because it feels unfair to not be able to get in and someone with the lowest of the low on the requirements to get picked over you, but at the same time I know Fresno City is one of the only schools that gives people with subpar stats a chance and I respect that because my chances are pretty slim in merit based schools.

I’m pretty sure they do strictly lotto so that health care workers are representatives of the population they serve.
