We have a vote coming up to decertify the union. The company is heavily campaigning to get rid of it. Anyone who has decertified and feels like they are better off? Also people who work without the union do you feel your raises are adequate. They state average merit increase is 2.5 percent

I'm a huge fan of nursing unions. I'd be skeptical of a company that wants to break their union.

I worked for union hospitals and non-union hospitals and in general, our pay, benefits and working conditions have been much better where there's a union.

Of course the company wants to get rid of the union- then they can do what they want and don't have to abide by the union rules.

As a manager most my working life I do not enjoy unions, to me it was another layer I had to navigate for really no reason at all. I follow HR rules and try very hard to treat people with dignity and fairness. When the union did become involved I had already tried (and can prove) the corrective measures we went through, they did side with me and could not really help the employee.

Now I have a different view with these new times in the work place.

I realize not all employers are fair, some are downright dishonest, and I thank my stars I work for a company that is honest in their dealing with anyone. In todays workforce I find my self often at odds with those who make decisions. Saying that, I must say todays workforce does need unions. I encourage people to band together to ensure your rights are not bypassed, and that your employee rights are upheld. Just remember you do have a responsibility do work hard and do your best, be productive and do not hide behind those unions.

Unions have been around since 1741 and have faded in and out. There are times when unions have helped workers gain higher wages, better working conditions and the abolishment of child labor. On the other hand unions have been greedy have placed road blocks making it difficult to operate on a daily basis. Unions have left their mark good and bad. Before you join really weigh what they can do for you without hurting your company.
