got an e-mail from ec today offering a free test! i am working on the

pre-req's for the aan program (started w/zero credits!) & have taken the clep hg&d and intro to sociology so far. i'm currently studying for the intro to psych which is one of the tests offered for free! i hope this is legit, i've registered for the end of sept. while i'm here posting for the first time, i'd like to say that this site (y'all!) has been incredibly helpful & so inspiring! here is the content of the e-mail i received....

obtain free college credit by taking beta exams for a new credit-by-examination program, uexceltm, developed by excelsior college and pearson vue.

to prepare for the launch of the uexcel program, excelsior is offering free beta testing which will run through september 30, 2008 or until excelsior has gathered enough data for analysis. exams are being administered at more than 1,000 pearson vue test centers.

if you have taken classes or have equivalent knowledge in these subject areas, calculus, physics, political science, and/or psychology, sign up today for your free exam.

register now, seating is limited. use promo code uexelfree.

Yeah got it too....I'm trying to register but having a hard time with the Pearson site. Who's eligible for this free exam? Is it only open to enrolled EC students?

From the site:

To prepare for the launch of this new program, UExcel is offering qualified students the opportunity to take a free beta exam in Calculus, Physics, Political Science, and Psychology.

Who should take the exam? Students who have taken classes or who have equivalent knowledge in the exam subject areas.

I am not enrolled at EC yet. They don't explain who "qualified" students are, so I'm assuming it's anyone who feels they have the knowledge to pass? The registration process went smoothly for me, they just wanted basic info & I was able to get the date/time I wanted. Hope you are able to get registered, good luck!

I tried to register for test today and the code above is 'invalid'. The site at Uexcel says they will give free test until they have enough data...i guess they have enough.

You must enter the code in the PROMO code box NOT the voucher box.

I just signed up for the PoliSci exam. The promo code is actually UXCELFREE (include the C in there). It let me sign up with no credit card or anything. Showed the $85 fee and an $85 credit for 0 balance. Pretty cool. Free college credit is always a good thing. Thanks! :yeah:

Thanks for pointing out their typo Donald! When I registered, I apparently used the promo code from another area in the site, as I encountered no problems. Best of luck to you on your FREE exam!!!

One other note..you can't copy and past the promo code. I tried that on a previous attempt, then again today. I continued to get "Promo code is invalid." So I decided to just type the code as above, and presto...credit and I am now registered..

Thanks again,

Ronnie

Just a little update. I took the test as scheduled. No idea if I passed or not, but I felt it was a fair exam. Similar to a CLEP exam, it covered a broad range of subjects, but not much depth.

Unfortunately, they won't actually grade the exams until they have enough test takers to get their numbers in order (they say it should be sometime in the fall).

So, the more of you that sign up and take the exams, the faster we'll get our grades. ;)
