Published

I've just made the huge mistake of reading some of the posts from the first-year nurses...and i'm feeling so discouraged!! no-one seems to like their job or would reccommend it as a career...i'm supposed to take a&p in the fall and am starting to have doubts. my husband thinks i should study business b/c it would be so versitile. any advise???? help!!!!:uhoh21:

(And actually, I won't even be able to say that I 'hate' my job for awhile. I love this phrase: "Market based salary adjustment." )

I am switching careers to go into nursing and I usually get a look of pity whenever I say that, but I am determined to go ahead with it. Funny that you mention business as a versatile degree option - I thought the same thing and even though I'm working for a megabank I'm miserable and I'm not even allowed time to get out of the office to take advantage of my so called benefits. Many new business grads I know are struggling to find something that will even pay $30k and that will of course require working 50 hours a week or so.

I feel that nursing will be a lot more physically demanding and I may not get a lot of respect, but at the end of the day I can feel like at least I'm hustling over something worthwhile, rather than having to act like a used car salesman to get more sales and add to the bottom line. I also agree that people are much more likely to vent on here, and there are going to be challenges your first year on the job anywhere.

I just left Corporate America and I can't tell you how wonderful I am feeling. During my time at big Pharma, I spent 3 of my 8 years there working on a Marketing team and I can tell you the marketing managers were extremely stressed, overworked and unhappy. If you choose marketing, you will have to eventually give up your family life because the hours and travel required are endless.

For the last year I have been taking pre-requisites and co-requisites. I will be starting nursing school in the Fall and I can't wait to get started.

The allnurses.com website has provided endless inspiration to me in the last several weeks and affirms my decision to become a nurse. There is more positive inspiration than negative.

It is a career that requires a lot of hard work, but it rewards professionals with endless career directions.

Good luck with your studies!

Thank you all for responding to my post--you have all been pretty inspirational. I have given it some thought and I know in my heart that nursing is the way to go for me...I have to at least try or I'll never really know if I could do it. And besides-I always said that I never wanted a "desk job'...thanks again....wish me luck!!!

u should stick w/it, all the nurses i know love their jobs and are very encouraging. and i know a lot of nurses. my mom and sister are nurses also. it's easier after a & p, just keep looking at the light at the end of the tunnel and tell ur husband to help u take it one day at a time.

You've got to go with your heart. I used to be a teacher, and I HATED student teaching. The teaching job itself however was much better. You've got to weigh the good with the bad. Go look at all the positive posts, they're there too. And i think the first year will be tough, like most new jobs, but i think it will be such a fulfilling job. You can always talk to nurses at a hospital or job fair. Hang in there!
