Hey all. I have a question for you in Fort Worth--which school do you think has a better program--TCC or UTA? Ive attended both and acutually graduated with BS from UTA. I want to do the nursing program but worried about spendig the time and money to take my pre reqs and then not getting accepted in. What heppens if you dont make the cut? Do you keep re-applying every semester?

One BIG caution - there are severe restrictions on financial aid for second degree students. This is my situation and I do not qualify for any grants, and there is not a great deal of scholarship $$ through the school. I did get one scholarship that is $3,000 for the year, but when tuition is over $20,000 that does not help much. The schools are not always forthcoming about the lack of aid available to second degree students (they want your money), so just be VERY careful unless you are willing to put the entire tuition on loans.:o

There also "loans" available though for nursing that are not available to other students and as I recall, they are available to second degree students. Check with the US department of health and human services. You usually have to agree to work in certain areas when you finish school to "pay it back" so they call them loans, but essentially they are forgiven if you meet the requirements and so they become a grant.

Those programs are great, unfortunately for me they are strongly need based, as in you have to have an EFC of 0 to qualify. My husband has a decent job, though we are by no means well off, so I don't qualify! FAFSA does not take many things into consideration, including the fact that we are paying for his college (TCC) out of pocket with no help! If you qualify, I say go for those, from what I researched, the high need areas that you have to agree to work in would be pretty much any hospital anywhere!

If you feel your cirumstances have not been adequately addressed by the FAFSA, you can write a letter explaining that to the financial aid officer and they do take that into consideration.
