Foreign Graduate (but US Citizen/Maryland Resident) nervous to work in USA/MD

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello!

I am actually graduating from a nursing school in the Philippines in April 2009. I was born and raised in Maryland, and only came to the Philippines for nursing school.

I am having jitters and very nervous about going back home to Maryland and working as a nurse.

  • Does anyone have any tips on how to make the transition back to Maryland easier?

  • Any things you may have noticed that Foreign Grads do or do not do in the hospital setting?

  • Do you know of any programs that may be available to orient foreign trained/educated nurses on the differences and need-to-knows of us nursing?

I want to be prepared and be a good nurse! Any information would be helpful!

Thanks soo much! ;)

hello:

l am a foreign graduate too. Just moved to Silverspring Maryland. You don't need anything except for you to apply for nclex in maryland and pass. The job market is really school in usa now especially for foreign nurses.

l move here on the 28th of jan. so far l have be called back by only one hospital. l hope to get the job.

good luck

the job market is really slow for foreign trained nurses regardless if you are a citizen.

Silver Spring Eh! Thats my hometown!!

Im worried about the job market being slow, but Im hopeful! Right now, Ill be focusing on my NCLEX and passing.

Thanks!!

You will be applying for licensure as an RN, there is no way to apply directly for the NCLEX exam.

You have to meet the other requirements listed on the website for Maryland for the foriegn-trained nurse. Licensure and immigration are two differnt things and you will be considered a foreign nurse.

There are not specific programs, what you need to know or learn will be offered during the orientation period of the job.

But you need to be aware that you are returning in a very tight job market for your location; even those that trained in the US are having problems with getting hired. And any facility is going to take someone that trained here and preferably did rotations in their facility before they will take someone that trained out of the US. This is just how things are now.

Would recommend that you check out the International Forum that we have here since much of it will apply directly to you. Also be aware that you will have specific requirements that need to be completed by CGFNS before you will be granted permission to sit for the NCLEX exam.

Thanks Suzanne.

I got the application packet from the BON, and now Im just waiting to graduate so I can work on getting all of it sent in.

Now, Im even more nervous with finding a job when I head home, with how things are back home... So Im thinking about volunteering in some hospitals while I study and get all my requisites in for the MD BON -- to get the feel of the dynamics of the health care system. You think thats a good idea?

Thanks Again!

Work in MD. I'm one of only 3 out of 18 RNs who were born in America in my dept. There are plenty of Foreign RNs here, nothing to worry about.

Specializes in Surgical/Ortho.

Suzanne, correct me if i am wrong, but i read under kaplan's website that cgfns exam is not required for Maryland, but the booklet was written back in 2007. So things could have changed, so what's the deal? I have a friend who is a foreign trained nurse who is trying to find a job here in the states, she was mostly looking for states that does not require cgfns. From what i understood, for those states, all she needs to do is meet the qualifications of the BON she is applying to right? She understands the job market right now, but wanted to at least start the application process and get the NCLEX out of the way. But how could she take the NCLEX without coming here first, and if she needs to come here to sit for the exam, how can she obtain a visa? Thanks in advacne.
