Forced to come in early??

Published

I need some advice. To give background per our union, Days start 0700-0730 with dinner break. Evening starts 1500-2330with dinner break Nights starts 2315-0715 (we get no scheduled breaks). I have been arriving at 2305 and 2310 never later. I usually get a lousy report because report has been given and the staff has left.) Today I was told by one of my coworkers that the staff was upset that I was not coming in at 2300 because they want to leave then (forgot to say day and evening leave at 1505 and 2305 at the latest). They say if we come in early we can leave at 0700 then. Sounds great only the day staff arrives at 0700 at the earliest and by the time we give report it is 0715 or later. So in a nutshell they want me to work a minimum of 15 minutes overtime with no extra pay so they can leave 25 minutes early and get paid. The night staff thinks this is fine and have told me I need to think that if I come in after 2300 I am late. I do not think this is fine at all, but I am new to this hospital although not to the corporation (there are 3 hospitals in the corporation). Any ideas on how to handle this.

"I am not working overtime for free so the previous staff can leave early and get paid". Tell that to the offgoing staff, the charge nurses, and the manager.

I'm sure Human Resources might be interested to know staff is cutting out early and getting paid.

Good luck.

at our hospital we come in a few minutes early. However, If we stay later then we get paid for it, NOT O/T, but straight time. I asked my unit manager if she cared she doesn't as long as we don't make 1.5/OT time. Most of us don't abuse that privelege since after 12 hours we want to go home.

Something similar used to happen where I used to work. There was a crossover of 1/2 hour during shift change. I worked night shift. My shift started at midnight, and evening shift ended at 12:30. Evenings were pizzed off if we were not there before midnight to give report so they could leave right at midnight. Dayshift putzed around until 830am and wouldn't take report until then, so we never got out until 840-845. It seems like night shift got screwed by both of the other shifts daily.

I think that goes with the territory, BUT as long as we can stay after shift and get paid, I am fine with it.
