For those that work per diem-when do you work?

Published

If you're already working M-F that doesn't leave much time during the school year to work. Do you just work a weekend day? Is that hard? In the summer it's no problem but during the school year I would like a day off occasionally. Just wondering how you do it. Thanks!

My PRN commitment at the hospital is 2 days/month. My unit there is always short from 3-7pm, so I will pick that up on a SAT, and that is enough to satisfy my NM.

I also pick up days during spring/Xmas/fall break to avoid working 6 days/week when I can.

I put in some long days in the school year in order to ensure that I am called more frequently during the summer at the LTC facility. (I have no one at home to worry about so that makes it much easier for me) Often will finish school at 2:45 and work 3-10 or work either days or eves on the weekends. Not at all interested in nights unless they make it a condition of employment.

I make sure to stop and get a nice coffee in between and somedays it is downright exhausting....but on the opposite week, when I get paid.....

How about home health. My friend is working PRN Home Health now. She said they pay about $40/visit and the time is pretty flexible. Sometimes, she said she just have to go in to take vital sign and that's it.

I actually work PRN as a substitute assistant school nurse and work about once a week...sometimes less sometimes more. However, I know several school nurses who continue to work their hospital jobs after they became school nurses. One works every Sunday 7a-7p in the NICU. One works two shifts a month in adult hem/onc. One works a four hour shift Thursday and Friday nights in the PICU from which I retired. ALL have children in college...

I just posted in a new thread that I'm considering going back to work just at hospital. I am contingent but not getting many hours this summer I have been trying to pick up on non school day and holidays. They recently changed the contingent requirement and now it's 36hrs per month. I have little ones at Home so working m-f at school and working almost every weekend to get in my hours is not going to work. I count on that extra money because I am paid hourly at the school and only work and get paid when kids are in school.

I either have to find a way to make it work financially without that extra income or just go back to working the hospital...which I really don't want to do :/
