Foam roll head immobilisers

You know the thin layer of foam in between these rolls, is this meant to be cut to separate the foam rolls? Or does if have to be manoeuvred carefully under the head??

I can’t find any user instructions anywhere!!

I believe it's supposed to remain in one piece, otherwise the two rolls on the ends have no stability in remaining appropriately spaced.
