FNP or PMHNP?

Specialties NP

If I decide to get my Master's in NP...I am having difficulty deciding between Family NP and Psych/Mental Health NP. Are there more jobs available for FNPs...it seems like I never find postings seeking Psych NPs? Also, is there a salary difference?

If relocation is not an issue, you should be ok with finding job either as FNP or PMHNP

OK Zenman! Where exactly is the land of enchantment? I have no idea!

I am still in the process of applying and ......I'm starting to question somethings. I am thinking that

it wouldn't be a bad idea to be FNP as well as psych NP. Just to open more doors. Or course I'd prefer psych. So, I am thinking that I will got for psych NP but plan to get certified as soon as I'm done in FNP as well. The FNP degree mills are all over the place so that would be like an 18month thing if not less. I think it would be easier to get FNP after psych then the other way around. Psych certificates are not offered aroudn here that I can see. At least not without having to be doctorate. Which reminds me. Since I'm not in a program yet.....how nervous do you think I should be about this whole "NPS needing to be doctorates by 2015". Some people say not to worry. Others say to worry and go for doctorate. I really don't want to.

New Mexico is the land of enchantment although I'm no longer there. Now I'm in the Land of Oz. I wouldn't worry about the 2015 deadline as it may actually occur 20 years from now. However, many schools are dropping their master's programs and going with the DNP so it may be more difficult to find a master's program. Yep, it's a bummer to have to go to school longer and not make any more money for the effort.

I'm going for PMHNP...then if I want to add on the FNP I will do so at my leisure while working in my chosen field. I hear all the time there are jobs in psych. And I truly believe if that's where you want to be doors will open.

I just looked up HRSA loan repayment jobs and it looks like there are a lot of positions for psych. I'm also planning on getting my FNP after I get my PMHNP. It's true, FNP post-certs are everywhere. I might wait a few years to pay down my loans first.

By that time DNP will become more prevalent and the numbers of post-master FNP will be limited.

meh. I don't think anyone really knows how prevalent the DNP will be, I kind of doubt that the post-masters certs are going to immediately vanish, especially for a field as popular as FNP. Either way, it doesn't seem like a DNP would take much longer than a postmasters cert anyway, so if it requires it, I can get a DNP in FNP, although I doubt that will be necessary.
