FNP or PMHNP if I want to open my own clinic?

Published

I live in a state with full autonomy for NPs and I ultimately want to open my own clinic. I'm having trouble deciding between FNP or PMHNP as I am interested in both. Someone suggested I do one and get the other later. Any thoughts?

I would first check the ads for nurse practitioner jobs in your city. See the supply and demand and your competition. Here, there are few nurse practitioner jobs listed and many pay RN wages or lower. I have posted those ads on this site. This part of California is the worst place to enter the NP market due to over saturation of NP's . The few jobs listed offer RN or lower wages and require 2-3 years experience as an NP to even have a shot at.

The psych NP market is better here with far better pay. Research your area well before committing. 70 % of the RN's in hospitals in many areas are enrolled in FNP programs. Here, only psych NP makes sense.

I make $120k as an RN. I would take an instant 20k pay cut to be a NP. See this ad. It's one of many. The psych NP jobs are 140 - 160 k......there is far less saturation. A far better return of investment. But everybody and their momma is going to school to be a FNP. Know your market.
