Hello everyone,

So my dream since I can remember has been to become a nurse; however, it seems as if it will never happen. I recently finished my pre-requisite courses to apply to the fall semester of the HCC nursing program. While I did not get any C's I made mostly B's :blink:earning A's in two classes and one lab. I realize this is not good enough since it puts my GPA at around a 3.38. Since I did not fail any of my classes, I don't believe I will be able to retake them. Is there any possible way to retake them? Or any way to increase my GPA since they mainly look at the pre-requisite courses? If not, what other options do I have for becoming a nurse? If anyone is out there who could offer any help it would be greatly appreciated. I will submit my application regardless but I don't have any high hopes of getting accepted, if there is anyway to increase my chances I would be so grateful to find out!

Don't give up hope! You made A's and B's. USF and SPC both have good nursing program you could consider while waiting for a response from HCC.

My back up plan is USF.

Thank you so much, Rahma_SN for your motivating words ! I was definitely considering SPC, but I have to call them to get more information, since I don't know how the transfer would work and what their pre-requisites are.

If you want to complete with a BSN in nursing ... I believe you would have to further your education at a university ( I might be wrong) Like USF.

All of the credits we took at HCC will transfer over to both these schools and we won't have to take too many more classes to be eligible for the programs.

I'm not really sure what they look at. From what I understand from professors and HCC website; HCC looks at how you did in your science courses like A&P and Math if you're in competition with someone else. They also look at how many courses you've taken compared to the other person. I would assume that is how it is for SPC since it is a small college with a large pool of applicants. On another note, I have heard that USF tends to prefer their own students (those who've been with them for a while) before outsiders.

I forgot to mention that PHCC also has a program, but the only thing I think I know about it is that you have to take the TEAS exam (general education, health-science exam).

I wouldn't give up! I recently got the general admissions information document from a professor. It shows what the GPA cutoff was for all health programs offered at HCC. For Nursing Spring 2013 the cutoff GPA was 3.330 and for Fall 2013 it was 3.429. So you definitely still have a shot at getting in. It may not be the campus and time you would like but you could still get in. If you don't get accepted to the fall program you can apply for the spring.

I heard there is a private school which I believe is called South Unniversity, that has a good program. I heard it is in Tampa and is often an alternative to HCC. Core prerequisite GPA is the first criteria for selection, but overall GPA is the tie breaker. Try to get a high overall GPA, and hope for the best.

Thank you so much ! This is all very helpful. Rahma_SN I did look into SPC and they count mainly your Pre-requisite GPA, but the microbiology credits from HCC don't't transfer over to SPC, it must be taken there, unfortunately. I'd have to look more into PHCC, since I haven't heard of it.

@sana214, this is actually so motivating ! I had heard something to that extent, but you have confirmed it. At this point, I'll take any campus really. Thank you so much !

@cane, I heard that South University is great, but it is also very, very expensive. I heard also that they have fast track programs for Nursing, but that would probably be the very last place to look due to the prices. :( Thank you very much :)

Oh, South University is also referred to as the Art Institute, its on Himes right in front of Al Lopez park :)

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site and to HCC. I just applied for the Fall 2014 nursing program. I dropped off my application yesterday (I know cutting it close); I wanted to make sure all of my transcripts were received before applying. I have a question; a few of my pre-reqs were 4 credits instead of 3, since I went to South University. Does anyone know if they will count my gpa higher or calculate it by the total number of credits I took personally. I hope I'm making sense! An example is in Intro to Sociology I got an A and it was 4 credits instead of 3, same with Micro. My micro lab was 2 credits instead of one and I got an A. Thanks for any insight and I really hope I get in!!! I wish all of you the best of luck as well! If they go by only counting by their credits, then I have a 3.46 :( But if they go by my credits earned divided by their total required then my gpa would be a 3.9

First off, I want to wish you the best of luck and welcome to HCC!

I don't want to mislead you or give you the wrong information but I think that it would not make a difference if they count it as 4 credits or 3 credits. My Anatomy teacher showed me to calculate my GPA using their method: Basically you multiply each credit by the grade: For example: If you got an A in microbiology and it was worth 4 credits, you multiply 4X4=16 and the lab 2x4, if you had gotten a B it would be 4x3=12 and 2x3=6, since an A gives you a 4.0 and a B a 3.0. You do that for each class depending on the amount of credits you received, then add all the numbers and divide them by the amount of credits. I can tell I'm being confusing, I'll do mine and maybe it will help you:

Anatomy and Physiology 1 = 3credits =A= 3x4=12

Anatomy and Physiology 1L= 1credit =B= 1x3=3

Anatomy and Physiology 2 = 3credits =B= 3x3=9

Anatomy and Physiology 2L= 1credit =B= 1x3=3

Microbiology & Disease =3credits =B= 3x3=9

Microbiology & Disease L =1credit = A= 1x4=4

College Algebra = 3credits=B=3x3=9

Sociology = 3credits=A=3x4=12

Total: 18 Credits Total: 61 points

Now: 61/18= 3.38 GPA
