My family and I are planning to relocate to Florida from Ohio.
I have 15 years experience as an RN, 8 years in hemodialysis. I have been a CNN for 3 years. Any ideas about salary and cost of living? I plan to stay in hemodialysis.
wow. I talked to Human resources at SMH in sarasota and they told me (and you can see this on the website too) that RN1 get $17.25 to start and RN2 get only a dollar and a quarter more. Whay are LPN's getting only $.25 less than the RN's?! That irritates me. I would think taht if you have more experience and education you should get more than just a quarter more per hour than the LPN's.
My cousin Susan has been an LPN for over 20 years, she gets 17 an hour LTC.
So if you just graduate from the RN program (i will in May 2006) then I will be a GN. A hospital is paying for me to go to school and I knwo I start work for them a week after graduation. So I actually have to work for the hospoital for a peiod of time b4 I can take the NCLEX?? bc I will only have like 0% experience after I graduate except for cliniclas. How long after you graduate do you wait to take the NCLEX? :uhoh21:
Wow what a lot of questions!!!First of all YOU DO NEED Pediatric/maternity experience - so many hours - cant remember how many of the top of my head now though....without this you wont be eligible to sit either the NCLEX or the CGFNS exam. So you need to look at how you can get this experience to qualify to do these exams.
I started the journey of relocating in sept 2002...and still waiting!!
THe NCLEX is tough - no denying that and it cost a couple of hundred $ to sit it, plus the cost of books etc to study for it.
Sorry it has taken me a long time to reply but just been to Florida for 3 weeks, while I was there took my NCLEX for the 2nd time and I PASSED....yippee!!!!
I am currently in NH and I was told by the human resourses at a hospital in FL taht if i know I will be moving to FL soon after I take the NCELX exams I should mark taht I want my test scores top be sent to FL and not NH. That way i will be all set when I move other wise it takes about 3 months from the time you apply in FL for the licence to be transferred before you are licenced in the state.
I sat for the NCLEX for my Florida license while living in New York State. Just notify Florida Licensing Bureau and they will set it up......I think they will be able to send you in the right direction..
NO PAY HERE!!!! Better make sure your wife can be working too. Cost of living is as the same in the north . I got here about 2 weeks ago and I can tell you the wages are frightening . 15.00 per hour ????? and they expect nurse's to do a great job for that pay!! . Cost of living : same amt for cable $50.00 per month if not more , telephone same as in the north 39.00 per month electric : not sure yet . food the same no better deals here . 100.00 per week. gas : higher than in the north . 171-178 per gallon. There are jobs in dialysis , but just be prepared for that wages decrease at least 10-15 $ lower. I took a 6 $ per hr loss:angryfire because I am in management and experience counted
What part of Florida are you in, Jboy? And how many yrs experience?
Using the median salary of $61,181 for a staff nurse, divide by 52 weeks/year, then 40 hours a week, gives an hourly base of $29/hr. If you consider that the person in the median has a good amount of experience, then I can see that being a reasonable hourly wage for an RN in FL, particularly if there is a shift diff involved. Using the lower 25th percentile of $55,018, it comes to about $26/hr. That I can see as being more accurate, at least in the Jacksonville area.

I am just starting Nursing school this fall (ADN with a 1st yr LPN Comp) and I wonder sometimes if I will make more money as an LPN than I do now as an Admin making $26K annually...My plan is to finish with RN and then move...Don't get me wrong, we LOVE Orlando and all the extras here, but I plan to make $$ somewhere else and then come back to visit, vacation, and retire...SALARY VS COST OF LIVING is difficult here...
Cost of Living in Beautiful Orlando FL:
My government sub apartment rent just went over $800 for a 3bd/2bth 1100 sqft. Gas/Power (remember it is hot 8 mths) $100-150 per month. Water $25 mth. Gas $1.80 for midgrade. Car Ins $120 mth. In-home phone $55 (go cellular, everyone is). TV Cable with internet $75.00. Food $100-$150 for family of 4. Sales tax of 6-7% on everything but perishable groceries.
Parents consider cost of good childcare $100-120 per wk per child and for the conscientious, beware of public schools (do your research), consider private, lots to choose from but fill up fast, will run you between $3,000-$9,000 annually. (no wonder homeschooling is getting popular here, ~700 families in my daughter's local homeschool group)
For those planning on buying a home add on pest control (for fireants, termits, etc.) and lawncare unless you plan to sweat it out with your own mower 8 mths out of the year...sometimes every week in the hot and rainy season...if considering a condo, keep in mind cost of maintenace, will run you $150-250 per month on top of your mortgage in a decent community.
It is not impossible to make it and enjoy, just come prepared and informed...cause it ain't all Disney World here...
Hope this is helpful!
