Florida GN Pay

Published

Does anyone have any idea what the GN pay would be for the Tampa area and do we also get shift/weekend diffs as well or straight hourly rate?

Are they negotiable?

I just wanted to know what to expect.

For Morton Plant, which is Clearwater: base pay for GN is 22.25 with a BSN, 1.00 extra for weekends, 3.00 evenings, and 5.00 nights.

Moon,

Where did you end up working after school was done? I finish in December. I remember not to long ago writing with you about getting IN to school. Time flies!

Hey!

I ended up accepting a position on a tele floor at Mease Countryside. I start August 18th as a "PCT/New grad" until my sit pass arrives. I'm very excited. I also plan to apply and get into the critical care internship when they offer it next (February?) and then hopefully start working in CSICU at Morton Plant, which is where I did my preceptorship.

Hope school is well for you:)

Nice! That is exciting for you! I only have 4 mos later and I really can't wait to be done. I'll be in Dunedin on the 1st and 2nd floor on the ortho/neurosurgery floor when I'm done with school.

woohooo, trust me. 4 months will fly by! It's weird because all at the same time, school seems to have gone by so fast, yet taken forever. I am so anxious to start (and pass the NCLEX). I also feel so happy about my decision to choose nursing. For the obvious reasons, of course, but also the financial security. Most people out of school don't make good money like this. It isn't huge, but it is so much more than before. I can't wait to start getting benefits. And dental! omg, it just feels great.:specs:

Because I did earn as you learn with morton plant, I've had benefits, which was part of the reason why I opted for this program. And thankfully I'm training end users with the new electronic software and I'm making what I'll make as a graduate nurse, so this summer has been very very good to me. And listen, I have a buddy who failed his end of program 2 times, and passed the NCLEX on the first try. He has serious test anxiety, you'll be fine.

Sounds like a sweet deal! I'm so excited that MPM will be paying $500 towards NCLEX expenses, as well as $2,000 in loan forgiveness.

I'm not too worried about passing the NCLEX. My school has a 100% pass rate. Just want to get it over with:chuckle

It really is a sweet deal and yes the $500 does help for sure. I'll be cashing that sucker in no time!

What kind of pay to you get in the earn as you learn program? Is it minimum, or actually enough to live on while you're in school? I'd be interested in hearing more about it. :)

Unless they have changed it, while you are sitting on your duff in class you get $8/hr. Then when you are actually a PCT, you get PCT pay, which I indicated in a previous thread. Here is how I feel about it, it's a guaranteed 20 hours towards benefits that I don't have to work, so when I DO work on the floor (your obligation is 1 day a week, however I do more) because as soon as I go over the other 20 hours worked, it's at an overtime rate. Make sense? So I only have to work 20+ hours physically to go into overtime. Now, the 2 year contract......I'm just going to throw this out at you. First 7.5 weeks, orientation, and that is probably 1-2 mos after graduation due to nclex, scheduling....so you are already looking at 9.5 months you've used up that contract...then tack a year onto that for experience so 1 year 9 mos...wow...bout time to look for another job if you REALLY wanted to. I work in Dunedin and love my floor, so I don't believe I'll be looking. Maybe transferring to ICU since I think it really will enhance my experiences before becoming an NP.....which I plan on allowing Mease to pay for as well :0)

Good luck, let me know if I can ever help. Oh, and the management is awesome, she is flexible if you are. She will do what she can to help you out along the way as well.

Do they let you work full time if you want to? My plan is to be ready to get into the nursing program by this time next year (I have a total of five prereqs to fulfill) and that sounds like a great option!

I think it depends on the floor. I work anywhere from 20-30 hours in addition to the 20 I get paid for during class time. On breaks, I work typically 50 hours......took a huge paycut coming back to nursing school so it pays for me to work as much as possible during breaks. I'm also participating in a special project with our conversion over to electronic medical records. So I actually, this summer, spend most of my time training end users rather than working on the floor. Again, if you get along with all of your management, there are exceptions to every rule.
