Fleas!

Published

I just started a new case, been on it for 2 weeks. The household has two cats, and the cats have fleas! I've gotten flea bites everywhere on my back, arms and legs! What would you all do in this situation?

Leave the case. Call the office and tell them why.

I can't leave this case. Fortunately the patient has not gotten bit from what I can see. Since the little girl has nurses 24/7, all the nurses have gotten bit.

Hi Smartypants, Are you going to tell us what happened with this case? :bag:

They sprayed for fleas over once weekend, then one of the nurses brought a powder he bought from Amazon to try to get them all. Unfortunately, there's still a few fleas hanging around. We/they can't do anything more because the mom is going to have her baby next week. I get a few bites, but they fade away in my days off.

They can still do & should do things even though mom is having her baby. Have they bathed the cats? Do they put anything on the cats to prevent them from getting fleas in the first place? If not the fleas will continue to come back.

Not that it's a nurse's job but here are some things that maybe can be suggested to the family that aren't horribly expensive that can help.

Sprinkle FOOD-GRADE diatomaceous earth on carpets, floors, sofas/upholstered chairs, mattresses. Brush it in, then vacuum. Even better if it can be left for 24-48 hours before vacuuming but I know that's often not possible.

Place shallow dishes of water with some dish soap in corners. It's even more effective if you can put them beneath a nightlight. I don't know why, it just works. If the fleas are bad, the dishes will need to be emptied every 8-12 hours.

If you have an SPCA, pet food pantry or some sort of local cat rescue, you might be able to get a few doses of Advantage Multi or Revolution donated to the family.

I love all these recommendations! I want to add one more. Wash the dang cats! If they have fleas, wash them with Dawn! We had a real flea issue & so we washed all of our pets (dogs & cats) with Dawn & then treated them.
