Flashcard suggestions for A&P class

Nursing Students General Students

Hi. I am taking a prereq course (Anatomy and Physiology) soon and was hoping to get a jump start on studying and assist my notetaking once the class begins. I figure A&P must be a class where there are already some really good flash cards out there so that I do not waste a lot of time writing flashcards, but spend more time studying/memorizing them. Plus, my artistic skills aren't that great, thus, I figure I will better understand the pre-made flashcards than my own diagrams!

Any suggestions re names of publishing co, names of cards (I assume Anatomay or Anatomy & Physiology) and where you found them (amazon.com, or wherever) would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you have other tips, or think I am way off base on my flashcard theory for this course, please let me know that too!

Thanks!

As they say...sometimes you just have to do it yourself...thanks again for the reminder!

Great points everyone!

Now I am the opposite, I do great with pre-made flash cards. It really depends on YOUR learning style. For someone to say they're a waste is just silly, it might be a waste to them, but it might save your grade if that's your learning style. I would have never gotten through without some classes without my flashcards. I use Kaplan's and LOVE LOVE them. Find them amazon or e-bay for cheaper than bookstores. I'm ready with my next set for my next class already! Good luck to you!

I feel like putting pen to paper, or flashcard in this case, is the best way to ingrain the information into your long-term memory. I also found it beneficial to answer the course lecture objectives in a narrative manner. If I could explain the physiology of the anatomy in my own words, I felt I would have a firm grasp on the material on the exams. I hope this helpful...Good luck!!

Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards - Second Edition were useful for me when I was prepping for my A&P lab. Drawing and making your own flashcards are useful too, but I definitely recommend buying these cards. Here's the link to the latest edition: Amazon.com: Netters Anatomy Flash Cards: with Online Student Consult Access (Netter Basic Science) (9781437716757): John T. Hansen PhD: Books

I made my own flash cards and did great in A&P.

Purchased those 3x5 note cards in bulk. :)

I made each body system a different, distinct color. It helped me to remember stuff during tests, too. I would think, "Oh, yeah, this was on one of the orange note cards, so 'XXXXX' must be the answer."

As for the material, some of it was just simple vocabulary and definition. For others, I made reversible questions/statements. For instance, on one side I would write "Testosterone stimulates the development of _________ sexual characteristics in males" and on the other side "_________ stimules the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males." While you are studying, you read the statement and then flip the card over; whichever word is in bold/underlined is the correct answer. And then you can flip the card over and read the question in another way later.

CoffeemateCNA - special Shout to you! Thanks fabulous tips. I love the color coded body system idea!

Great idea CoffeemateCNA! I am definitely going to use those tricks this semester. Thanks for sharing.

these really helped me with lab. my lab book wasn't very good so these filled in the gaps.

amazon.com: anatomy flashcards (9781427796943): stephanie mccann, joanne tillotson: books

they didn't do anything for lecture though. for that the only thing that worked for me was reading every chapter 2x - once before lecture & once again a day or two before the test. but my professor only tested over 2-3 chapters at a time.

these cards helped me.

Have you checked flashcardexchange.com yet? That site is awesome. For a small fee, you are registered (permanently) and can access flashcards for everything from medicine/nursing/science to real estate. When studying for any sort of certification, etc. I access it, print them off, laminate them, cut them, and am ready to study. SUPER site.

I agree that the act of making the flash cards is the most helpful thing. I bought the Kaplan flash cards but never really used them. What I did find helpful was the Anatomy Coloring Book. It helped with lecture and lab. I like it because it is very interactive.
