fish philosophy

Published

are any of you all familiar w/ the fish philosophy??

our ed implemented it about a year ago - it is all about encouraging employees to have fun and laugh at work - w/ studies that prove a happy employee makes happy patients/customers...... for those of you who work in hard ed's - you should check it out - it makes a bad nite much better.....

yeah - we have a computer system that we do all (and i mean all) our work on - including interhospital emailing - we are supposed to log out every time we are done using, but frequently forget when busy

a few of the more rotten employees will send out some quite perverted email from your acct when you forget to log out - it is hilarious - but big brother didn't like it when auditing our email...we all got "talked to"

Think FISH is good.

But to make it work you need an excellent manager to support it.

In addition to managers, you also need to have workers who CHOSE to have the "FISH" attitude. And it is a choice.

The fish philosophy is great. Bring a good attitude to work. IMHO however- attitude reflects leadership.

So even with great attitudes, if unfair staffing ratios, favoritism, incompetence are allowed to swim in your pond- you will still have some unhappy fish.

I am trying to stay a happy guppy. I actually have a written list of why I stay at my job and bring it out to read to myself when I fear saying something negative that I will regret. Smiles everyone!!!!!!!

I LOVE the Fish idea. I will be bringing it to my managers attention!!

Pam, I almost did the same thing on our interhospital email. I sat there reading tons of emails about how this dept or that were going to be leaving early on Christmas Eve and I wanted to put out a mailing to the entire hospital that the ED was going to be OPEN and seeing patients 24/7 through the holidays, but I didnt. Our administration has no sense of humor.

I initially thought you were referring to the Salmon Philosophy...

Work hard all day to swim upstream, just to get screwed and die in the end.

We also were required to watch the fish video during orientation and encouraged to find ways to have fun at work. The reality is, however, that we are to crank out the healthcare at breakneck speed juggling impossible assignments under ridiculous circumstances. There is no room for "fun". We're just trying desperately to hang on to our license for one more day. We are expected to provide service as if they are at a 5 star hotel. No kidding, we had a mandatory inservice telling us so. Of course, they will provide no tools or additional personnel to acheive this goal and God help you if someone actually COMPLAINS about their service. We also recently received a memo stating that laughter cannot be tolerated in the workplace as it sends the wrong message to the patients...as if we don't care that they are sick or suffering. How dare we enjoy even a moment of our shift when their dilaudid might just be delayed for 3.5 seconds. :smackingf

Ok - so now we in the ER are taking our philosphy from the Pike Fish Market? The ER that I worked at (level one trauma center, 73,000 visits/year) did the Fish philosophy. Our manager was wonderful and that made more of difference than the fish philosophy.
