first year... no job...

Published

Now that all license issues are over its time to find a job. wondering is it as difficult in all other states as it is in NYC? So far I have applied to every hospital, almost every home care agency, even some pharmaceutical companies, etc. Everyone asks experience and most- BSN. I have ASN and was thinking about going for BSN after at least get my first job and maybe have my employer cover education expenses, but where is my first employer? Even if i get a job in home care or rehab, none of NYC hospitals consider this as experience. I do not think there is a problem with my resume as it was done professionally. Over all- its really frustrating! Guys, any word of advice?

Thanks.

Specializes in Critical Care.
I've realized it's all about networking...but also never forget where you came from. I did a nurse externship and worked as a nurse's aid in a city hospital I never planned to work in, just wanted to get my feet wet. After finding out what the real world was like when I ventured to look elsewhere I wished I had never left. I called the nursing recruiter a couple of days ago and she remembered me and told me there was a hiring freeze:o.

But THEN my fate as it were, turned before my eyes, she called me again last night and said that she had been able to borrow a little more time and that she had an opening and scheduled an interview with a unit director for me this Friday!!!! and the best part? I told her I had looked elsewhere and had not found what I wanted nor had any desire to work anywhere else and she said 'It's time to come home then'

Awwwwww. wish me luck on my interview!:heartbeat

Best of luck to you. :redbeathe

Specializes in OR.

I got hired. The unit director who remembered me as a nurse extern welcomed me back with a hug then told me about the 2 positions that were open. I sat bewildered for about a minute not knowing what to decide...she told me " We're in the midst of an economic crisis and you have TWO options to choose from" So in the end I took the OR position and I will still get to cross train into Radiology at some point....wohooo!

At the very end she told me becuase they are experiencing hiring freezes they are trying desperately to buy some time and that she will have to call me later on in the day to let me know if I can officially be hired. She made the phone call just in case, while I was in the office and came back to me saying 'I have some good news, I can officially hire you' :yeah:

And then she said it is with great pleasure that I offer you this position...that's perhaps one of the best things you could ever hear from a new boss......I am on cloud nine...PRAISE THE LORD!

I can identify. I am having trouble finding a job as a new grad in Ohio. Most hospitals hire new grads in the fall only in this area, and most of those jobs are in critical care. I want a med surg position. I have had the same experience with companies wanting at least a year of experience.

location, location, location. there are many areas in the us where they will hire someone with an associate degree and pay for their bsn. no experience necessary. here in dayton, oh. hospitals are even willing to put new nurses with no experience though a 6 month paid internship.

which hospitals in dayton? i am in the area and looking for a job.
