Now that all license issues are over its time to find a job. wondering is it as difficult in all other states as it is in NYC? So far I have applied to every hospital, almost every home care agency, even some pharmaceutical companies, etc. Everyone asks experience and most- BSN. I have ASN and was thinking about going for BSN after at least get my first job and maybe have my employer cover education expenses, but where is my first employer? Even if i get a job in home care or rehab, none of NYC hospitals consider this as experience. I do not think there is a problem with my resume as it was done professionally. Over all- its really frustrating! Guys, any word of advice?
Thanks.
been through the same. Started off in a nursing home... only to be told that this doesnt count as experience. Then i picked up agency nursing. Have you tried to get into an agency and do temping?
How does agency nursing work? and would you recommend that for a new grad? I just want to get my foot in somewhere and then work my way to where I want to be.....:paw:
Networking! I just landed my dream job in OB, there were only two positions and I got one. I started early. I sent my resume to the director of the dept. I wanted to be in and to the HR dept. I introduced myself at a luncheon and attended hospital forums to introduce myself. After, sending my resume, I did a follow up call to the director of the dept.(Know who is hiring you, so that you can contact them yourself. It says something about your determination)
During my interview, I brought a list of questions I had for them and a copy of my resume (they were impressed).
Then, afterwards I sent out thank-you cards for the interview. They sent me an email telling me how impressed they were. I was the only candidate that did that. I landed the job. Sell yourself, why you want the job, why you are the best, your strengths, oh and don't forget turn your weakness into a strength. Keep trying!
I too am completely frustrated in my job search. I passed the NCLEX in July and still have not found a job! I honestly had no clue that it would be this difficult. I guess living in NYC does not help. It seems like you have to know someone to get into a hospital around here. I have sent my resume to just about every hospital in the area. I had an interview at one hospital, thought it went really well...and nothing. I feel like a giant loser. I worked ao hard in nursing school and am so discouraged.

Can't agree more. It is so true. You really have to know someone. I started this discussion and so far have not had any luck since in job hunting. But still trying... sometimes I have thoughts to give up. May be with beginning of a new year something will change. Moving out of state is not an option for me, simply can't afford it, plus loan payments will be here soon. This is just so discouraging!
I feel exactly the same way. I want to give up sometimes. It is beyond frustrating. My parents keep pressuring me to get a job and they just do not get it. I really do not want to work in a nursing home, but may have to. I just don't feel like that would be wise since I have zero experience and that is just not were I see myself right now. I feel sooooo lost. I honestly just have no clue what to do!!!!
I am in LA/OC area and there is definitely a lack of jobs for New Grads. It's very competitive for a New Grad position! Most hospitals are on a hiring freeze or there will be 250 New Grads applying for what few positions are available per hospital. Very depressing and stressful. I myself am trying to obtain a job before I even take my boards because all the New Grad jobs will be filled if I wait. Good luck with your job search.

I've done exactly what you did. Still no job offer!!! I don't think my interviews are bad because I usually get a 2nd interview. Hmm....wonder what I'm lacking....
I've realized it's all about networking...but also never forget where you came from. I did a nurse externship and worked as a nurse's aid in a city hospital I never planned to work in, just wanted to get my feet wet. After finding out what the real world was like when I ventured to look elsewhere I wished I had never left. I called the nursing recruiter a couple of days ago and she remembered me and told me there was a hiring freeze:o.
But THEN my fate as it were, turned before my eyes, she called me again last night and said that she had been able to borrow a little more time and that she had an opening and scheduled an interview with a unit director for me this Friday!!!! and the best part? I told her I had looked elsewhere and had not found what I wanted nor had any desire to work anywhere else and she said 'It's time to come home then'
Awwwwww. wish me luck on my interview!:heartbeat
