What states allow GN's (Graduate Nurses) to work?

Published

I plan to be a GN in about a week and am wondering where I might be able to work. Oregon does not allow GN's to work. I'll have to wait for Excelsior to go through my paperwork, wait to take the NCLEX and wait to get my RN cert. I'd really like to work sooner (because I really need the money).

Yes NY When I started, in L&D I was a GN and they give you a certain amount of time that you have to pass the NCLEX and get your RN and if you fail you have to work as either an LPN or Tech, I forget which, as I passed first time so didn't have to deal with this personally, until you do pass. Check out the NYS BON website for details.

-- though I have to ask...forgive my ignorance.....you got your RN online? Were you an LPN first and did the RN online? I can't imagine one could get an ASN/BSN online without being a nurse first.

Yes, I did Excelsior's online program. I have been a paramedic for several years and their program allowed me to bridge over to RN.

At the hospital I am working in, GNs are paid the same rate as an new RN without experience, and I receive the RN wage from the first day, including orientation. I applied for a full time position with the good faith understanding that I will stay after I pass my boards, but I did not sign a contract. They have a new grad incentive program that pays $7500 over 3 years with the first $2500 bonus after 6 months of employment. Additionally, I receive $550 compensation for all fees related to my licensure (testing fee, BON application fee, review for NCLEX, etc.) I did sign a statement that if I left before 6 months I would have to pay back the $550. I plan to stay at this position for at least 1 year, possbily 2.

What hospital is this?

What hospital is this?

Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. They readily accept new grads and have a terrific orientation program. There are still a lot of RN jobs in this area at almost all the hospitals so they are essentially competing for the new grads.

Arizona does (intern programs) and some of the new grad programs will take you at a slightly lower rate if you have a date in the future.good luck to you :up::up:

333333sj, where do you live in AZ? UMC in tuscon, Northern arizona healthcare in cottonwood/flagstaff, MMC in phoenix new grad program is taking apps April 15thish-May, Banner Health had alot of new grad openings a couple of weeks not too sure now, Phoenix Childrens has new grad posted still as of weekend, It depends what kind of work you want, I know some new grads that had applied for a RN and simply spoke to the HR dept and got their way in. It seems like, you really have to do a little extra to get noticed right now. Haven't checked VA and I know the DOC is always looking for RN's and u get 13 holidays:yeah::yeah::yeah: good luck to you

Missouri does.

NY uses GN's and loves them. In NY if you graduate from a approved nursing school, they allow you to work 90 days without anything! all you have to do is send of your paperwork for licensure. I graduated from Excelsior Feb 20th and Im now working as a GN in a lvl 2 ICU. I also applied for my limited permit and in NY you can work 1 year with a limited permit without taking the boards! Although the hospital I work for states you have to take your boards within 6 months and pass within 9 months are they can terminate your employment.

GN's start at the same rate as RN's which is 22.06 I took a night shift which has a shift diff. of 4$/hr. At my hospital all new RN's/GN must complete a general orientation of 2 weeks and then unit specific orientation with a preceptor of up to 6 months. During this time you are working under the License of your preceptor and they must co-sign everything so there really is no rush to take the NCLEX because you must go through the orientation weither you have RN or GN behind your name. With that being said I will be taking boards soon after I take a prep class hopeful in a few weeks.

I live in MA and they did away with the GN status years ago.
