New Grad with Some Job Choices

Hello All

New grad here. Pasted the boards a month ago and had been applying to jobs.

So as of right now, I have accepted an offer at a hospital A . I really like hospital A but its an hour drive away, about 34 miles. I am supposed to start orientation Monday 12/5.

As of this afternoon, I have another offer from hospital B. Same pay as hospital A, same unit (both med/surg), similar training (very least 3 months preceptor-ship). I also really like hospital B. The difference is that B is a 20 min drive and is full time. Hospital A is only 2 twelve hour shifts a week and B is 3 twelve hour shifts a week.

The only con I have with hospital B is that orientation does not start till 1/7/2019. What that means for me is another month out of work but I have already waited this long ( 15 months now)....

Any advice out there?

Do you have the offer from b in writing? Will you want to work for hospital a or their system in the future? I don't normally recommend burning bridges, which you may be doing by bailing so close to your start date, but I think in your case it may be worth it. Full time and shirt commute is huge.

I would lean toward hospital B as well. Is there a particular reason you took a part time position at hospital A? As a new nurse, being able to work those full time hours is going to be very helpful in giving you time to adjust to your new career. Also, it is very important to remember that 12 hours shifts easily turn into more. Add an hour long commute and you'll be out of the house for 14+ hours each work day. Is there a difference in the benefits (health, dental, vision, PTO, etc) between the two hospitals?

Ultimately, only you can really make this decision. I think it is very important that you make this decision quickly since you are suppose to start orientation at hospital A very soon.

If you have an official job offer (i.e., one in writing from HR) from Job B and can financially swing waiting until January, then IMO take Job B.

Otherwise, don't turn down a guaranteed job offer (i.e., Job A) based on a verbal promise from Job B that may or may not materialize into a bona fide job. You can find plenty of threads here from posters who were verbally offered a job, but no job offer from HR ever came and so they were left with nothing. In this job market, that is not a risk you should be willing to take.

Again hospital B would be my choice. That is if you want full time. Enjoy having time off and the holiday season without having to worry about your work roster.

I don't see myself working for the distant hospital in my future, if I had work local. However, still no actual offer letter....

I took the job at A because it is the only or first actual job offer I had gotten at the time. I was impressed with the facility and the interview process wasn't bad. It felt like a no brainer at the time to say yes.

call hospital B HR: "Hi this is Frekledan, I spoke with X on mm/dd, and s/he offered me a position to begin 1/7/19, and I'm waiting on a formal offer letter so that I can begin preparing for my start date". Their answer will help guide you. Let us know how that goes. Good luck with your career!

Update: Got offical job offer from hospital B and I accepted. Starting 1/7. I am pumped!
