New grad in outpatient surgery center

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi everyone, I'm a new grad in CA. I didn't have any luck applying to hospital new grad programs, so I took a position at an outpatient surgery center in preop/pacu/and maybe OR later on. I want to get an MSN later on for nurse educator or pursing FNP. I'm afraid that the experience at surgery center won't transfer well into those. Will this affect my application to those programs? Also, is it hard for me to get a job as a floor nurse later on with the surgery center experience? I hope I can get some advice for everyone.

Thanks a lot.

That is a good job to have. Your experience, PACU in particular, is going to be useful to you and will make you an attractive candidate to hospital surgical units. You should be fine. I am a nurse educator. So is my boss. Her specialty was PACU.

Thanks for your reply. May I know which specialty are you a nurse educator for? Thanks.

I am a professional development specialist for a local community hospital with roughly 63 beds total. We have two nurse educators, myself and another. The two of us cover all areas of the hospital, including ER, OR, Med-Tele, PSU, ICU, L&D/PP, etc. Prior to doing professional development I was in cardiac critical care.
