ok, so i have now completed 12w of orientation. I did 6 weeks on med surg and 6 weeks on the floor i was hired for. I have now finished my orientation on nights...and tonight is my first night on my own=( i am scared to death any adv? I have asked all my preceptors for adv and suggestions. They all have said good things about me, and i have even spoke to my manager. I have a lot of nice people on the night shift who i know if i needed the help they will help . But uggh i just cant wait to get through these first few months on my own. I know i will never feel ready because there is still so much learning to do. Do you have any adv for me on how to handle myself? nights is so different from days and its a nicer pace for learning i think. I plan to take it a min at a time and i am not afraid to ask for help! i hope that this helps me get through tonight. oh man i am freaking out. :(:crying2:

Good luck! Seems like you'll have a lot of support from your preceptors. Just make sure to try and stay organized, prioritize. And never be afraid to ask for help! When doing your assessments on your patients, if you don't know where to start, just start from the top:

-Take a look at your patient- Are your ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation) okay?

-Vital signs

-Physical Assessment- any change from last shift?

-Medications to give now?

etc.... Getting organized is one way to get started. Make a checklist for each of your patients, prioritizing the things you need to get done first.

Good luck tonight!

Congratulations! I just started NS and where you are seems like such a long time off. I am sending positive thoughts, you are awesome!!:heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat

Just remember that everyone has bad nights. So when you encounter one don't let it get you down. Don't think that you are a horrible nurse. Keep your chin up and remember it won't last forever. The next shift will be better. With every night on your own you add more experience and more confidence to your belt. Best of luck.

Ask lots of questions and get help when needed. I am almost 2 months on my own and I don't mind getting clarification when I need it.
