First Narc write up... can management do this to me?

:crying2: I've been out of school and working at this hospital since June 2008 and write up's have never been a problem of mine (except a few here and there when I suddenly lost my mom in 11/08).

I got a telephone order and i forgot to write the order on the chart, fax it to pharm, and transcribe it on the MAR (gosh it looks worse when i write it out like that). I did an over-ride to get the drug out and documented in my nurses notes "pt. c/o abd pain, medicated per MAR" It was a new admission and the pt. came to the floor with orders stating "nofify hospitalist on arrival." I assessed the pt. and by the time the doctor called got the order for the pain medicine.

I totally messed up and I know but this is what my manager did:

1. called me thursday afternoon and told me about the write up, for me to not report to work friday but to HR at 0830.

2. It was her and someone i didnt know that made me write and sign a statement about what i did.

3. Calls me Friday afternoon and tells me the person who is going to investigate the incident is not there on Fridays. Tells me I cant work this weekend (I only work Fri, Sat, Sun) and this lady wont be back until Tuesday.

And all I really want to know here is am I going to loose my job!? Manager says sorry I cant answer that. So I've been sick over this since Thursday afternoon and I wont find anything out until Tuesday if not a day or so after!

Is this terrible or typical? I've been so upset over it, I've started looking for a new job!

Can anyone shed some light?

Were you drug tested?

Typical. Be grateful u have your job still. Reflect on what u could do better and how u plan toprevent yhos from happening in future.

Hi nnestle.

When you went to get out the drug and it had to be over-ridden, did that not trigger your memory that pharmacy had not gotten the order. Ususally it just takes a few minutes for pharm to unlock said drug for that patient if it's usually stocked? Like Sue said, did you offer to be drug tested? You've been there for a year and a half. If this is your first error of this kind, I would hope they are fair with you. Good luck.

no i wasnt drug tested, it happened back in january. my manager told me that was not an issue, no one suspected i took it and I'm not luckly i still have my job. i have no idea if i still have it or not. it just seems a little outrageous to take me off the scheduled for an entire week and leave me completely in the dark like this. but maybe im wrong...

we fax the order but it takes a while for pharm to put it in and this pt. was in a lot of pain. over riding is used often on my floor, and i've always written the order before i take it out. i just happened to miss that step this time

It certainly seems OTT to me, but then, we can't take anyone off the schedule because we never have enough nurses.

Let us know.

I am curious only because I was the rep for nurse and other hosp employees. Do you belong to a union and/or do you have ? It seems that you have been going thru all the meetings at your hosp alnoe and there have always been 2 or 3 representatives of your facility all along. When you are invloved, it is hard to hear and see and remember everything that happens. Diod they give you a copy of your writeup? You might want to check in with your state nursing organization about your rights. Keep in touch!

No, no union or . The write up came from pharm, not the patient or anything. any time you take something out of the accudose without an order the pharm gets a print out and they are the one who wrote it up. And just BTW its Monday 3pm and i still dont know if i still have a job. This all started with a phone call from my manager last thursday afternoon...

I've only been to 1 meeting. it was me, my manager and one other person. I may have been introduced to the lady but i cant remember (probably cause i was so nervous) so i dont know who she is. This meeting was Friday morning and my manager call me around 11am that day to tell me the 'investigation' wouldnt begin until Tuesday because the person who does it wasnt there (?) I dont know if that person doesnt work on Friday and just happen to not be there that particular day or what. So i wasnt allowed to work my ENTIRE 3 days of the week because investigater person wasnt there on friday?!?! It seems so messed up. If the 'investigation' person isnt there on Friday's, then why didnt they begin this on a day he/she works?

I was never given a copy of anything, and the only thing i've signed is my written report of what happened so the investigation can begin. I should talk to SOMEONE cause it doesnt seem right to keep my in the dark for what has been 5 days now!

I'm beyond frustrated!!!!!!!!

I am sorry for your plight. When I worked in management any time that an incident occurred time had to be allowed in order to gather all the facts and often during that time, the employee was suspended from work. Once the investigation was completed, a meeting was set up with both the employee and human resources. The employee was told the result of the investigation.

I'm used to working with an incrimental disciplinary process i.e. verbal warning, written warning, suspension, then termination. However, in your case, guilt was never the question. I would guess that your manager will be reporting to you a group consensus and the corresponding disciplinary action. Best of luck to you.
