First job years after graduation

Published

What did you do to prepare for your first nursing job years after graduation?

Need more info. Are you an LPN? When did you graduate? Ever worked before?

No im not an LPN yet, still working on getting licensed. Graduated 5 years. Been in the medical field for atleast 10 years. Two years as a unit clerk, six years being a Scrub Tech and the last two, Materials Manager for the O.R. Hospital setting is nothing new to me, but the line of work is obviously different. I just wanted to know how everyone prepared for their first job as a nurse without any experience at all.

Why do I want to be a nurse if I already had a great job? Because I love nursing, I want to be a nurse, Ive always wantd to be one ever since I was little. Its easier for me to go the LPN route then a bridge program for RN..

There was really no way to prepare, I had no idea where I would end up working. School is really the best place to get prepared, clinical was my experience. You learn as much as you can while on orientation and then the rest you learn by doing it firsthand and asking questions, lots of them. I carried a little notebook and I wrote down so much from orientation and I refer back to it if I need to, now I really don't have to because I've been there for 5 months so I'm pretty comfortable with how to do things there, but of course there is always something new to learn. The other thing is I learn from so many people, not only the RN's there, but other LPN's, Med techs & CNA's, I work with some great people and they are always willing to answer a question for me if needed.

Good luck!
