which first? fnp or cnm?

I am thinking I want to get both degrees...mostly to be marketable in my very very rural area. (i live 3 hours from the closest major hospital...we have a hospital but its only 16 beds and as far as laboring moms go, if anything goes wrong, they life-flight them to the big hospital). I figure FNP in addition to CNM would allow me to do both.

Does anyone have experience doing this??

And, which degree program would you suggest doing first??

I would do FNP first so that you have a better chance of finding a job while you get the cnm.

I have to agree. I was wondering the same thing, because initally I wanted to be a midwife, and as I learned more about FNPs, I realized that I can care for the family as a whole. I am still taking pre-reqs, but I decided to do FNP first because I have small children, and midwife hours are horrible. Im going to apply to some graduate entry programs, and do the FNP first and when my kids are older, get the CNM.

Have you looked for dual programs? Does Frontier offer a dual program?

Frontier doesn't let you do both at the same time....but you can go back and get a post-masters certification in another specialty after completion of the first.

I think Vanderbilt offers a dual program, but I would guess that Vanderbilt is expensive.
