First Day LPN Fall 2008

Published

FINALLY! WHEW, Didnt think I would ever get to post this thread! Now where to start... :wink2:

First part of the morning 8-10 we just refreshed on orientation. Introduced ourselves, met the 3 instructors, got some of our books (9 of them), and generally discussed how busy and hectic the next year would be, but also how worth it, it would be as well. 10:00 Break, Then PVR (Practical vocational relationships) This is basically the history of Nursing, the course will cover 10 chapters and only last 2 weeks. (Then Fundamentals will take its place). Starting right off in PVR we had a pretest 25 questions, (they said these were questions that will be on the final exam and they didn't expect us to know do well and it didn't count toward our grade) then we went over the syllabus for this class. On Monday I have to turn in a Profile about myself, Who I am, what brought me to nursing, what I like, how I like to learn, the way I learn best. My hopes and plans for the future 5 and 10 years. I also have to do a 2 Week time Managment paper hour by hour 6 am - 10pm starting with Last Sunday, (said to be creative). Both of these are due the 25th. Also have to read the 1st 4 chapers of the book, with a quiz on Chapt. 1 on Monday and Test on all 4 Chapters on Wed.

12-1 lunch break~~

Next was A&P, You guessed it, another pretest, 50 questions.. I got 30 out of 50 points. (39pts was passing) but on a good note the highest was a 32, lowest was a 17, and it didn't count towards our grade either sooo. Again they said these were questions that would be on our final. ... Quiz on Chapter 1 on Monday, Test on Chapter 1 on Tuesday, along with a quiz on Chapter 2. Test on Chapter 2 on Wed., Test on Chapter 3 on Friday.... So yeah 3 test and 2 quizes next week on A & P alone... Said basically it would be like this all year!

Then we have medmath/pharm.. Same thing pretest didn't count, and don't know my score yet, 25 questions, Quiz over ref. table in front of the book on Monday, and will have a take home quiz on Monday night. and a Pharm take home test on Tues. A test on 1st 3 chapters of Med math on Wednesday. The med math part of this class will last about 8 weeks, and the Pharm will last all year, we will do Pharm as we deal with the need ( cardio drugs when we do Cardio etc.) Which I think is great, will make it much easier to take it all in.

So it will be like 1 subject every 2 hours, for now with lots of quizzes and test. But I am sooooooo excited! 45 students, There is a pretty good mix of ages, most are younger, (early 20s) then maybe 15 above 30 maybe 6 that are around my age 43. 2 males, 3 instructors and 1 director.

The instructors, I think are willing to work with you, if you have problems, you just need to talk to them, they each gave us their private e mails and phone numbers so I thought that was cool. So didn't appear to just be a job for them, They really want us to learn. Anyways gotta go start reading........

I'll try to report again on Monday........ and I look forward to hearing everyone else's stories, and if you have questions that I didn't hit on feel free to ask.

:wink2:Hello Everyone! Well we got lucky tonight and got out early. So once everyone arrived we still had to wait around. Not sure why but anyway class started about 600pm We review the school policy's and went over the hand book. We then got fed a box lunch w/a drink. (didn't expect that) I thought that was nice.:up:Anyway, we went around the room and everyone introduced themselves. Not too much to brag about but it's only the first day. We already have a 1-2 page paper due Oct. 1st.:typing We get one of our test books tomorrow and we will hit the books on Monday. That's all for now. We are on our way now. NAPPYNVA which one were you? I was hoping you were trying to find me, too. I hope to meet you face to face tomorrow. I'm the tall one with twists in her hair. I sat up front on the left 2nd desk.

I thought that was you too! I'm leaving in an hour. Yesterday I waited just like you and I was tired by the time we started. Looking forward in working with you in class.

Hi Everyone! I thought I would give a little idea of what's going on in nursing school. This was our 2 week and man the instructors are not playing around. I've already had 2 quizes 90 & 88. I could have done better but I was nervous and rushed a few questions. We started A&P and Vocational Nursing. I enjoy my instructors I think they teach very well. It's just the beginning though and it gets harder as the weeks are completed. I'm looking forward to it. I have a Study Quiz paper due 10-1 which I typed up lastnight and I think I did ok. Writing papers are not my favorite thing to do but I manage to get it done. I don't want to get in bad habits. I want to try and turn in my assignments when they are complete. Well we have gotten through body planes, the cell, connective tissues, quadrants and elements and mixtures. Also my A&P instructor teaches Medical. Termionolgy and we have testing on roots and suffixes now we are learning the prefixes (ugh:)Not my strong point but I know I have to study more on these. Which you will find out when you start. In vocational nursing we have covered the history of nurses such as Florence Nightingale, the nursing insigna's, nursing in the early years during World War I and the first schools. Also the degress for nurses, nursing theory's, the roles of student nurses, insurances, the different nursing organizations and acute and extended care facilities. Wow:no: that's alot but I know I can learn it.

Just wanted to give you guys some things to look for. Next week we are learning the Integumentary system and taking a my first quiz on vactional nursing.

Wish me luck and good luck to all!:yeah:

One month down, 11 more to go! So I will try a give a breif and accurate rundown on my experience so far, so anyone getting ready to start lpn school will have a little bit of insight.

Classes so are are:

A&P: So far in the first month of class we have completed and been tested on the first 8 chapters. Lectured on Chapters 9, 10, & 11, will test on Ch. 9 on Thursday, Ch. 10 on Friday, and Ch. 11 on Monday. Also on Friday and Monday we will lecture on Chapters 12,13,& 14. (with the test for those the following Th, F, & M..... So its like a endless cycle. So far I am averaging a 90%. (93%= an A)

Fundamentals: We have completed and tested on 22 Chapters, ( but not in order) and lectured on 5 others. To be tested on them over this week). We do the fundamental chapters to coincide with the clinicals that we are doing in class each week. Such as, handwashing, sterile techniques, vital signs, wound dressing, positioning, moving and ambulting pts, etc. (I'm sure I am leaving alot out.) We do the clinicals one day a week on Wednesdays & Thursdays, the class splits in half the class that isn't doing clinicals, has Medical Terminology. So far averaging an 89%.

Med. Term: This class we only have once per week, We lecture a chapter one Wednesday, and test on it the next. Then lecture the next chapter. We have covered 3 chapters, Test on Chap. 3 tomorrow. So far averaging a 98%. (but its only been 2 test :wink2:)

Math: Oh my GOD..... We had our Math Final yesterday! I ended up with a 92% for the class.... (like I said 93% is an A..... :() But sooooo glad that it is over!

PVR: This was a 10 hour class basically on the history of nursing, and a little about how to be a "student". That we had the first week of school. Fundamentals, picked up where PVR left off. Ended up with an 89% in that class.

Started Nutrition today..... Ummm Should be interesting!

So otherwise, I don't think it is as hard as it is "just busy", never ending, soon as you are out of one chapter you are into the next, no time to breath and take it all in so to speak. As you can see in the last 30 days we have covered sooooooo much information, there is soooo much more to cover. You don't even have time to get bored! Its hard for me to imagine that it will be like this until next August. But I am sure it will all be worth it in the end.

Anyways good luck to everyone, and keep us posted as to how you are doing..

Take care

I'll try to give the best update I can on my program. We had 3 hurricane days so we are a little more behind than we already would be. We have done only one test in A&P. She's going kind of slow with it; it's a new book and she doesn't have it planned fully. We have our 2nd one tomorrow. This covers about 4 chapters. Took our second PNP today. Have another next week. Fundamentals. First test yesterday, second today, third monday. But we are about to start on unit four chapters. Each has about 3 chapters. She hasn't put up the med terms test yet, but we have the stuff for the first unit. Haven't started nutrition yet. It seems we are a bit slower than the rest, but we are starting to get on track and have a little something to do every night. We have a unit test every day this week. Oh, pharmacology we've only done one quiz so far.

JQ, good for you! I'm glad you had a good experience your first day. May your instructors continually show you the respect you deserve as a human being. Have fun, study hard, and don't sweat the stuff you have no control over. :wink2:

:wink2:Morning all! Just thought I would give you a little update on school. Well, we are at the end of our 4th week and boy...it's been busy.

We are now studying the skeletal system and we have our first BIG test in A/p on Wedneday 10-1. It will be on Cells, integumentary system and the skeletal and muscles. Wish me luck with that. Also, I have a BIG test in Vocational nursing on 7 chapters on Tuesday next week:chuckle. When you start school you will see that the instructors will fly through the chapters and you as a student will have to do your part and read..read. Lets see...hmmm I forgot to tell you I have a quiz on the skeletal system Monday. Guess how busy my weekend is going to be.:typingstudy..study.

So far I have 90,88,90,100 x2 in A/p and 100 (first quiz in Vocational nursing). I'm striving to not just "barely" pass but to strive for being an A/B student which will take some work from me and I'm ready for the challenge.

Best of luck to all of you!:heartbeat

:smiletea2:Stephanie,SPN:nurse:

whew, have not had time to post since all this started in august, sure you all can understand that!

we are in 5 week blocks throughout the semester, so each 5 weeks there is a final and if you are not carring a b average, you do not move on to the next block. the first 5 week block ended yesterday., and i am very proud to say that i am moving on with an A. unfortunatley i don't think about 4 of the students will be with us next week.

i am an older returning student. i was afraid that by being in my mid 40's that i would be at a disadvantage, but i am finding that life experiance has really helped me! so many things, medically that i have gone through with family, myself and friends have given me a bit of insight. i am not saying that i am any smarter than the "freash from high school" students, just that i have heard about some stuff and experianced some stuff that makes alot of what we are studing make sense. i guess yuou would say "a point of reference."

i will close by saying that i am still very excited about this whole thing and am really learning.
