Finding my passion in nursing

I have been a LPN for 6 months and during school I thought I really wanted to work in hospital but now that I'm there I don't really like it. I'm also working in EP office which is a little boring for me. I'm looking at lab results, phone triage, misc tasks. Basically a desk job. I'm a junky for variety and new challenges. I get bored very easily. I feel bad about leaving this job only after 6 months but I'm not happy. How do I find something that I really like and passionate about without looking like a job hopper? I plan on going to get my RN so that will open up new opportunities but what do I do until then? I love nursing and taking care of people but I want to find that one place that I love going to everyday and being passionate about it. Any advise would be greatly appeciated. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity what didn't you like about working in the hospital? I am also a junky for varity and new challenges. I have chosen critical care medicine for my specialty, specifically because of this purpose. Also you might want to look into emergency nursing. What are your interests? What made you get you into nursing, I mean what made it interesting to you to start the lvn program. Maybe you can talk to your director of nursing and explore different units of the hospital.

Is there another unit in the hospital that can provide you some more variety. I don't think it gets any more variety than hospital nursing. This would allow you some time without looking like a job hopper.

You might have to find passion elsewhere in your life and not put so much expectations on nursing, because it seems to me you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Get that RN and get to an ER or become a flight nurse, critical care nurse or even work in a mental institution.

Sometimes, we don't find a job that thrills us. In fact, very few people have jobs that they love that much. Sometimes, we settle for a job that is "just OK" that provides us with the income, the working conditions, and the schedule that allows us to do the other things in life that we want.

Be careful about job hopping in the hopes that the next job is going to be so wonderful that it fills your soul with joy. You may be setting yourself up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations.

You say that you want to go back to school to become an RN. As you said, that will open up more opportunities. Perhaps for the moment, you should evaluate jobs on the basis as to whether or not they offer you the compensation and schedule you need to accomplish that goal. Compromise on the "passion for the specific job" for now and look at the bigger picture. Use your current job as means to support yourself as you return to school. Find a job that will give you some good experience, a good schedule, and decent pay. Channel the energy related to a passion into your schoolwork.

It also may help you to think about why you decided on nursing in the first place. What type of nurse did you image yourself becoming?

Thanks for all your input. You guys gave me alot to think about.

I think the reason I don't like where I'm at right now (I'm in PCU in a Heart Hospital) is everyday I come in pass medication for the first few hours then do patient care but my main responsibility is passing meds. The experience I'm getting passing meds is great and I appreciate that. I just feel like I do the same routine everyday.

I originally got into nursing because I love helping people and I wanted to make a difference.

One of my first desire was to be in the ER because I knew there would be variety but this job came up so I took it. I have also been told I would be great in ICU, so you're right I need to concentrate on getting my RN and appreciate the experience I'm getting right now. Thanks again for all your suggestions.
