Finding a Job as a New RN- NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

I graduated in May and did my nclex in august and i have been looking for a job and it has been extremely challenging. I graduated with my associates and I'm enrolled in a Bachelors program but in the mean time i want to gain some meaningful experience. I received a Per diem during flu shot season but it has basically ended and i have been vigorously searching but has not been getting anything. I have applied to hospitals , nursing homes, agencies you name it I've applied. I have walked in and done applications, I have fax cover letter and resumes. I have dropped off resumes at the HR departments , i have been doing all that has been suggested but it just seems extremely hard for a new Nurse with no or limited experience. I need some advice or some tips on where to apply in NYC to find a job with my associates. Please I need advice and help.

Id recommend expanding your search radius substantially. I graduated with about 200~ BSN students from Stony Brook, and I dont think any of them were able to get jobs in NYC.

The nursing market in NYC is ultra competitive, and if you only have an associates its going to be even tougher.

Your best bet is either expanding the radius and maybe getting lucky with a job north a bit, or finding a place you really wanting to work (once you get your bsn) volunteering for a while there and networking your butt off. That way youll have an in as soon as you get it.

Otherwise its extremely hard, so youll need a bit of luck (or knowing the right person)

My advice is networking , networking .

I'm so sorry. NYC is just impossible for an ADN. Have you already tried the city hospitals? And beyond the city?

Part of the problem now is that all these hospitals are merging so you've got only 2 or 3 major employers controlling the market. I don't know queens and Nassau county very well but what about north shore LIJ? Or whatever that "health system" is now called...

Good luck.

thank you.. I know it is ultra competitive i was hoping i would be able to find something here but i will def have to start expanding my radius.

I have tried the city hospitals..HHC and I have applied to LIJ but they wont even looking at you with an associates. I have been applying to Nursing Homes as well but they too are not budging.

How long till you graduated with the BSN ?

Personally I think your best bet is volunteering at a hospital youd really like to work at, so that youll have an in as soon as you graduate with the BSN.

Yes. The tides have changed for ADNs with no experience in the last 5 years. While you are in school for the BSN, maybe you can land a job in a hospital in another capacity. This seems to be the only way to transition to an RN position. Unit clerk is a possibility.

Best bet for ASN RNs is volunteering in hospital, and/or paid home care or community health jobs (ie group homes for development disabled or people with psych issues) search craigslist and idealist.org . Hospital will not hire people with RN licenses as anything lower level than RN for two reasons #1: you are held to the responsibility of your license so as unit clerk or nurse aid you are responsible for providing RN care when needed however you are not hired in that role by the hospital so it is a liability for the employer. #2: employers know that you will get an RN job eventually so in a short time they will be left looking for another clerk or nurse aid to replace you...therefore its a loss for them to hire someone who will leave their non RN role as soon as they get an RN position.

Maybe attend an open house?
