Financial Assistance (WIA)

Published

Does anyone have any experience with or know anything about the WIA program in KY? Particularly Boone County(I heard it varies by county)?

I start the RN program at Beckfield College on 4/6. I'm applying for WIA....I have my first meeting/orientation(??) about it on 3/31. I suppose it's a group informational-type meeting to get started in application process.

It's all handled (in Boone County, anyway) at the One-Stop Career Center off of Ewing Blvd in Florence. They really wouldn't say much about it. So far I just know that if I qualify for WIA, the max is $3500 per year for 2 years, equally dispersed each quarter/semester.

Does anyone know of any other types of grants, etc in KY? I'm a single mom with 3 kids so I'm trying to apply for as many scholarships, grants, etc as I can to help out. Of course I've already filled out the FAFSA, etc, with the financial aide office at the school, but I'd like to lower my total LOAN amount as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight!

See if you qualify for Voc Rehab or dislocated workers. Same office.... Oh yeah if you plan to seek public assistance there is some money there too...My sister works in the Community Based Services office and they love to give lots of support to students especially when they graduate.

I used WIA and it was a great help. Good Luck!

Thanks!

I'll check into the Voc Rehab, etc....never heard of either one, but I'll look into it...

The only thing I've found concerning Voc Rehab is for physically or mentally disabled people, Is that the program you're referring to?

Your sister works in the Community Based Services office? I may know her....what's her name? I'm in the KTAP program right now, that's all I know of so far for assistance for students (other than WIA, but that's at the One-Stop office). My KTAP worker is Dana Franxman, and her supervisor is Des/Desirae. I've never really had to talk to her suprvsr, but Dana is GREAT. She is such a great case worker, and such a nice person. First I had Mary Vocke, I really liked her too. When she left, I believe Dana took over all of her cases.

KTAP is really a wonderful program though. I get monthly cash assistance, transportation assistance, food stamps, daycare assistance, a voucher to Uniforms Direct for 2 sets of scrubs and 1 pair of shoes once per year, Voucher for car repairs up to $500 once per year, Medicaid on myself and my 3 kids.

I truly don't know what I'd do without it.

Now I'd just like to try to find help with funding school, hopefully WIA will work out good for me.

Thanks Again!

WIA?? Just curious what is that?? It might be something I might qualify for. Single Mom trying to go to school and make it here!!

I'm a single mom too, you should give it try...you'll probably qualify.

It's money that they(the gov) pay to your school toward tuition, etc.....if you have other grants, loans, etc then it can just end up making your stipend checks bigger:D

I know the amount that they pay varies by either county or state, i'm not sure which.....

but I live in Boone County. The full amount they will pay here is $3500/year for 2 years.

In boone county call the One-Stop Employment office on ewing blvd in florence....other counties probably just call their unemployment office or similar.

Tell them you want to apply for WIA, and want to get in to the next orientation available.

I have my second meeting/orientation this week.

so far as i know, this is how it goes:

You go to 1st orientation (mine was a group of about 18 people), it lasts about 2 1/2 hours, filling out paperwork, learning more about wia, etc.

The following week (or sometime soon) you have your 2nd meeting. You fill out a job history-type-thing. You will get assigned a case worker that you will call to set up an appt with....i haven't had that yet, so i don't know what you do at the appt.

If you're not working, I do know that you need to "apply" at 20 different jobs (via internet, newspaper, unemployment office--same office if your in boone county---, however). they give you a paper to keep track of the jobs.....they don't necessarily want you to get a job, but just want to show (to whoever they need to show it to...their boss???the gov???) that you are applying, but that it's not enough right now and you need a college education to get better jobs

thanks. i am going to call our unemployment office now!! it's in another town but I will definately check it out. I am working right now, but will have to pretty much quit and work PRN once I start school. Does it matter now that I am working or should I wait until I quit.

hmmm, I'm not sure about that , sorry.

thanks, i'll check into it and see what i need to do!

Anyone interested in learning about WIA training programs in your state may find this link helpful http://www.careeronestop.org/WiaProviderSearch.asp

Click on your state and then look for "Education" or "Training Programs" or something similar. Sometimes it is helpful to contact the school directly and "work backwards" from there. Good luck!

I am a WIA manager in Wisconsin (was thinking about going back to school for Nursing that's how I ended up on this site).

I would like to clarify that this list is a list of potentially eligible training programs. The reason i say potential is that each region (a collection of counties governed by a workforce development board) sets its own rules about eligible programs. usually they will only fund high wage/high demand jobs. the catch is they have to see it as high wage/high demand in the area you live. So if Nursing is in demand in the country but for some reason not in your area they may not fund it.
