Financial aid and student loans???

I was wondering if you get enough money in financial aid, but still need help financially as far as gas or helping to pay bills can you then get a loan, or can you only get a loan if financial aid isn't enough for books and tuition? Thanks!

(By loan I mean stafford loan)

i had the exact same question as you and got mixed answers.

i just wanted to make sure that everyone that said "yes" to the op, took out a stafford loan along with a pell grant that completely covered your tutition and books? in other words the stafford loan was extra money in your pocket??

i read on the stafford website that you are unable to take out a loan that exceeds actual school costs. also, the amount that you would receive is minus whatever your pell grant was (if you received one).

anyway, i guess i will need to go directly to a financial aid advisor (not just the front desk clerk) and try to clarify if this is possible. if it is, maybe i can quit my second job :)

The stafford loan I take out is for more than my tuition, so yes, I do get some extra back from that to use for living expenses.

i took out a stafford loan in addition to my pell grant i received. the stafford site doesn't mean school cost in reference to only tuition and books, it means cost of attendance. my cost of attendance for this school year was $17,000. my tuition was only $1600.
