I am so happy to share that I am finally going to put into practice my nursing education. I will be a Public Health Nurse with the Health Department in the TB clinic, starting in two weeks Can anyone tell me what to expect, and how to best prepare myself to do the best job?
I have been reading the forum on Public/Community Nursing and the consensus on this nursing path is positive (mostly all nurses who are in it are happy); which makes me feel great about my decision to this being my first nursing job. I realize that money will not be as great as working in the hospital setting, but considering the tremendous stress my classmates are under working in the floor, I feel that it compensates, and in addition the benefits and the state paying for six credits a semester of graduate school is the icing on the cake.
I also, would like ideas of what type of Master Degree I should get. I have always been geared to education as being an NP is not a motivation for me, but I also want to chose wisely. I plan to start school in the fall of 2016.
Since the pay is going to be low, I would also like to have a part time job for a few months to earn a little extra. Any suggestions?
Thank you for reading my post.

Can't really advise on the Master's Degree process but want to give you a huge congrats and best wishes on landing the job!

Congratulations! I work in public health and I adore it.
I got my masters in nursing education from WGU. Its a good option for self motivated students.

I work in public health and I am very happy, as community and public health are my passions. I personally am thinking about one day becoming an NP or getting a master's in public health.
Thank you so much for your good wishes. I have spent the last few days reading on the Community/Health Nursing portion on allnurses and I am so happy to see that this field is awesome. I always wanted to start bedside nursing and hone on my nursing skills, and I have tried so hard to get into the hospital setting, getting several certifications, etc., but it just did not happen. I feel convinced that God had this instead for me, and I am trusting this path.
When considering graduate school, the state will only pay if it is a state university, so going to WGU will not be an option. Because of my age, I need to make sure that whatever Master Degree and specialty I decide to get, is one that is going to benefit me in the job market, and increase my income a little more.
Before going to nursing school, I always held a full time job, and a part time job. Now, I would like to supplement my income a little to be able to afford some necessities

I see this post is a couple months old. I am a new public health nurse as well. How are things going for you now?
