I for one am looking forward to this and hope that Governor Scott will not veto it. It will be real nice to be able to write a compound prescription with Testosterone, or for Testosterone medication as a whole...much less the ability to provide a short course of an anti-anxiety med if needed. As NPs, I believe STRONGLY that we will be more selective and short-termed dosing of these drugs. I for one know that if someone needs something STRONG for pain...they are going to be referred to pain management. I don't EVEN want to raise any signals there! I agree with
What does this mean exactly you can prescribe can you open up your own clinic like some of the other independent states?
This legislation only deals with prescribing controlled substances, not independent practice. NPs in Florida can open a clinic if they want to, but they need a collaborating physician to do that.
Florida "pill mills" have thrived for years without NPs having the ability to prescribe controlled substances. I very much doubt that this is going to change much about that issue.
However, it will make it easier to provide pain control to post-op patients in the hospital when the NPs are managing orders for the surgeon who is busy in the OR.
Did the Gov sign yet ?
Funny...just got a notice from WUSF that he signed it on Friday, but I can't find anything to collaborate yet: Nurses Score Victory With New Prescribing Powers, Transfer Compact Signed Into Law | Health News Florida
