Finally decided to quit nursing

Published

Hi everyone. I have been a nurse for over 7 years and for the past year I have debated getting out of the profession for good. I had just finished the week long hospital orientation for a new job and was to start clinical orientation Sunday. Between Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon I was having big doubts about the job, then I realized that it wasn't the job itself that I didn't like. I hate hate hate being a nurse. I called the unit manager on her cell phone Saturday afternoon and told her my decision and that I would not be coming back. I am scared to death because I have no income at this point but at the same time I have a sense of relief and peace about the whole situation.

I know this is an older post but the problem is very real for so many. To all of those who are hesitant to leave nursing because of the money, you are doing no one any favors. Including yourself. While all across healthcare there are screams of a nursing shortage, respect and treatment of nurses have only gotten worse by companies. They run us short then cut shifts that continues the burden. After all why have 3 nurses when 2 can do it stretched thin and running. Long term care especially has become a burnout mill. I am getting out. Yes I have bills but I would rather simplify my life and live on less than shorten my life with the stress they pile on. Nurses have always worked hard for their money but the respect is not there in today's healthcare system. I have worked in a clinic, in Long term care, assisted living, and Hospice. While hospice was rewarding, I had to step back after years due to the stress. I worked side by side with nurses who left the hospitals and I think it is safe to say that the problems are all across the board. To those who love the job, stand your ground when needed because facilities are taking advantage of the fact we care. We do the job at the cost of ourselves for the sake of those we care for, and Corporate offices know this and use it to their advantage. And if that all isn't bad enough, treatment of LPNs and CNA is at an all time low. Nurses are eating their own and treat others that work along side them awful. So I say again, do not just stay in it for the money and to those getting out for less paying jobs....I understand and I am joining you. Namaste

MN Nurse 1993:

Have you figured out something to do now that you've decided to leave nursing?

The OP may not see this thread since it's a few years old, I'm just wondering how it all worked out for the OP?
