OK...I've been trolling and asking a few questions here and there, but I'm sooooooo nervous. I just finished the application process for Nova Southeastern for the fall class. I read on someone else's thread that they interview all applicants, but I'm wondering how long do I wait before I call to set up an interview? This is the only BSN program I'm applying to and pretty much have my hand committed to this pot (for those that play poker you understand.)
I'm nervous and just hope all my hard work w/ my 4.0 pre-requesites and a not so stellar 2.9 undergrad will get me in. Any good vibes would be appreciated.

oops...I thought this was fingers crossed...
I'M IN, I'M IN, I'M IN!!!!! I got my letter today. I was accepted to start Nova's BSN program for Fall '08! I'm soooo excited and still can't believe it.
Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. Now that I got into nursing school I have to get through it. My goal is to be class valedictorian. Nothing like setting high goals, huh?

Hey guys! I know that some of you that were accepted into nursing school at NOVA might not have the time to reply, but I am still going to ask some questions and hope for some answers. I applied to NOVA nurisng school for Jan. 2009. I just finished sending the entire application packet this week and I feel pretty confident. So far I have recieved an email from the financial aid office stating to apply financial aid, one thanking me for my interest in NOVA and one on student rights. It is so hard to have to wait for something like this.
I also applied at MDC nursing school for Jan. 2009. I have too many stories about this school (the high GPA story) and so I decided to pursue NOVA after reading and hearing so many wonderful things about the school. I just finished my AA at MDC and have a 3.28 and I am pretty sure I will not get an acceptance letter from MDC and so I am putting all my eggs in one basket and hoping for NOVA.
My story is long and a difficult one to tell. When I graduated high school I started FIU with a scholarship and was doing great. Then, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer the third semester at FIU and I did not drop out. Instead, I struggled to fight my way through my classes, while I tried my best to be there for my mother during her chemo and radiation, I did poorly and recieved some not to wonderful grades. I left FIU and started working. My father could not keep a job and my mom was a nurse, but she could not work as much as she was. So I took it upon myself to help my family. I met a wonderful man (eight years my senior) and after a year of dating we were married. I then continued to work and added to my responsibilities of being a daughter and now a wife. (I was 21 at the time). I decided to start back school at MDC and I knew when I started I wanted to be a nurse. My mothers cancer went into remission and I felt confident I could do this. I finished all my pre-req classes for nurisng school about two years after and was super hesistant to apply. I ended up not applying and just taking extra classes to keep up my GPA and working. I was working a Miami Childrens at the time. About a year and a half ago I stopped working to go back to school and finally decide what I was going to do. Six months later, at the age of 24, I found out that I was pregnant. I was so happy and so was my husband. My mothers cancer came out of remission that year and it ended up spreading to her spine. I gave birth to my son on July 30, 2007 and a few months later my mother went on long term disability since she was too sick to work. The bright side to this was that she would be able to spend more time with her grandson. She began oral chemo and radiation again. In January of this year, I continued taking classes in order to pursue an AA degree since I was unsure about getting accepted in MDC nursing school and I was afraid to apply. Around the same time my son turned 6 months and my mother became so ill, she was admitted to the hospital. She spend a week there and progressively lost the feeling and sensation in her legs, which enabled her to walk. She was able to walk with a walker, but would fall all the time. The doctors told her that it was obviously not good for her to fall since she could break a bone, which would add to her troubles and so she became bed ridden. At the end of January, she was discharged from the hospital and was at home. I spent my days spending most of my time w/my mother. About two months later in March, my mom passed away in her sleep. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with in my life. After this ordeal, I am now more dedicated and motivated to becoming a nurse.
I wanted to ask a few questions from those of you that did get accepted into NOVA's nursing school. I wanted to know how long does it take for them to reply to you and/or call you for an interview (that is if you are going to get one)? What kind of questions do they ask you at the interview? What can I expect? I know the best advice given is to "be yourself," but I wanted a more in depth answer than that since I am extremely nervous. I read something about a writing portion before the interview....is this true and if it is what do they ask you to write? And after the interview how long does it take before you know if you are in or not? I would also like to know about the Baptist Scholars Program. Does anyone know when you can apply for this and how long it takes before they call you for an interview? Also, how long does it take before you know you are in? Also, what is the schedule like the first semester at NOVA? What are the hours that you have to be there? Do you do clinicals the first semester or is it just regular classes? And if you do have to do clinicals, where do you do them?
I am very interested in the Baptist program since I live about 10 minutes from Metro Zoo and would not like to have to drive so far just to go to school. I would much prefer going to Baptist. But I will take what I get since getting into a nursing school in Miami has become somewhat a challenge.
The reason I am asking all of these question are obviously because I am nervous, but it also has to do with the fact that I need to leave the country at the end of October for about 2 weeks for a family emergency/illness. I am hoping I can get all of this stuff (interviews and applications) done before I leave (with the assumption that I am accepted into NOVA). As for now, I am going to keep my fingers crossed.
First off, and this is just something that bothers me, Nova is not all capitalized. Its Nova Southeastern University; no need to capitalize everything.
That said, you have your essay written. The writing sample is just to make sure you can formulate an idea and write supporting sentences on short notice. I think the question was something along the lines of : a quote by Florence Nightengale then, "why did you decide to become a nurse"? I basically reiterated what I wrote in my essay.
Its a good program, I'm questioning how "tough" it is at this point, (mind you only being one week in), because the AP class is just a review - so far - of what my pre-req AP class was. I know subsequent classes will not be the same, but I'm a bit disappointed in these first few classes. Some call it easy A's; I was looking for a challenging education. Again, I know it will be tougher here on out.
I wish you the best success. I will re-read your post and post more to it at a later time. I just perused it, so I apologize for the things I am missing in my response.
I'm so sorry for your loss, and hope no matter what you follow your heart to nursing.
Waiting4school, you said you were accepted with a 2.9 gpa but 4.0 in pre-reqs? Just wondering, and you may not know the answer, but did you know lots of students in that situation? I have around a 2.9 collectively, not just from the past two years in college but to the equivalent of another year and a half in high school... I messed around back then even though I KNEW I was taking classes for college credit. Anyways I will mostly have a 4.0 or close in science pre-reqs... do they look at those more closely? Also I have a ton of extracirriculars, etc. will that count for a lot? You might not know the answers to any of these lol. Sorry for all the questions... I just recently started looking into BSN programs and am VERY interested in Nova. Just wondering how much of a chance I may have. Thanks for any info you might have. I know you might not be able to get back to me soon or answer in that much detail because most of your time is probably taken up by
school, but I would appreciate any answers or advice whenever it is convenient for you to give it. I will hopefully be applying for Fall of next year if I do end up applying.
BumblebeeRN, I know you went there too so feel free to chime in if you know any of the answers to these questions. It sounds like you really loved that program! I'll be honest, I was still iffy about Nova until I read your posts. You make it sound like the perfect school! They should pay you to advertise for them! Lol. Thanks in advance for any info or advice you might have.

Why does it bother you if NOVA is written in all caps ??? it's not a big deal how it is written.
I agree that the first semester doesn't feel like nursing school. I did well in all the classes except Advanced A&P, I studied and studied and honestly I do not know why I did not do well-- the information was just entering one ear and out the other.
Good luck to you!

Personally, I would of loved to be finished at NOVA with my BSN and $40K in debt.... it's a lot better than going to Keiser or city college for that price and end up in an unaccredited/provisional status school such as those.
Nova has full accreditation in all aspects.
But now because I have my RN license, the state universities have to take me in since I meet the requirements. So I want to go to FIU- RN-BSN because it is super cheap compared to NOVA. and if I have the opportunity to get a cheap education, I would go for the cheap one and not end up with loans.
now, if i had to go to a private university- I would go for NOVA. Eventhough I think that they would want me to take that A&P class over again to make up for that D that I got when I was there.... and frankly. I am afraid of failing that class again- and that is a $1K something class. I don't want to do that again.
So far, I just have 2 more classes to take before starting FIU, which is a math class, & sociology and I am good to go.
NOVA for the generic BSN is worth every penny!! you definitely get what you pay for there!!
but now that I am an RN, I would go the cheap route- and it's online anyways, so basically the same thing as NOVA
