Felt like a complete IDIOT !

Published

:crying2:. Today, I had to take the test for my first aid certification by the school system, given by my boss. The test had 25 questions I got 5 wrong.:banghead: Its like I make A's and B's on nursing exams, but totally bombed this easy first aid exam. Here are the questions I got wrong.

What is the initial assessment of someone who has severe bleeding ?

I picked: pale skin

The correct answer was: Soaked clothing with blood.

How long do you flush an eye that has a chemical in it ?

I picked for 5 minutes

Correct answer is: 20 minutes

What do you do to control bleeding ?

My answer: apply a tourniqet (spelling) above the wound

Correct answer: apply direct pressure to the wound

I got another question wrong, about how to position a client who had a stroke.

What do you do for a victim who has constant chest pain ?

I picked: Give aspirin and wait ten minutes

Right answer: Call 911 right away

I feel like such a failure. I'm embarrassed and can't believe how a nursing student who made wonderful grades can get the most easiest questions wrong. I don't know what I was thinking. I should of reviewed the book she gave me, but I assumed it was going to be an easy exam. I hope being on such a long break hasn't allowed me to forget everything I learned.

Well, vent is over... Thanks for reading.:zzzzz

Okay Patrick1RN.... I already have beaten my self up over this and don't need anyone else to show me of how much of a idiot I was. Thanks for your clarification though. I learned my lesson, and will reread the book next time.

Sorry if my response is a bit harsh

But why are you beating yourself up

over something so simple

Read the book next time is all I am saying

It is impossible to know something if you had not

read the book. It doesnt mean you are stupid.

First Aid and Nursing school are two different things.

Although once you start working as a RN, it all comes

together.

Im not a touchy feely kinda guy, but please dont let

this bother you . And no, Im not one of those who wants to eat

out young.

First aid (AHA) is intended for lay people, so the questions might have been so basic to you that you were thrown. I agree with the above posts. Always read the material provided, as there will be clues about expectations there.

BTW: We all have done that from time to time. When we have ACLS and PALS, etc. nurses get fighting mad because they fail the written tests simply by not reviewing the material. I hate it when I get mad at myself :)

OP, there's no such thing as an easy test. Repeat after me: There's no such thing as an easy test.

It's those "easy" ones that can trip you up and embarrass the snot outta you :D

Yes, maam ! I repeated that to myself about two times already. You're right... no such thing as an easy test. :wink2::clown:

RNKitty has made good points. Chin up... after you experience traumatic events, you will learn... we have to pass tests along the way to lay down a good foundation. I promise you'll make mistakes, but you take them and learn from them... move forward and you will be better for it.

I believe you will remember the correct answers from now on and know what to do in a real life situation. If Iam your patient, that is what matters to me, not how many times you took the test.
