Fellow Preceptees: How much extra work do you have during Preceptorship?

Hi, I'm starting preceptorship shortly. In addition to 40 hours a week in the hospital we're being assigned some extra work:

  • One 3 page paper a week requiring research
  • Two service projects requiring research
  • Weekly on-line discussions with our fellow classmates... also requiring research

We've been out of clinical the last two months but doing extra classroom work in place of those hours. We thought we were going to be doing precepting only during this next phase and were surprised to see what looks to be the equivalent of another course piled on.

Is this common?

Wow! That's a heavy load!

We turned in our final research paper prior to the start of preceptorships. During preceptorship time we turn in weekly goals with a self evaluation. That's it. We focus on our preceptorship and only our preceptorship.

I had to come up with some objectives prior to starting preceptorship, but during preceptorship, I just have to journal my experiences once a week to my instructor. Like the PP said, it's all about focusing on the preceptorship itself.

I'm sorry you have that extra load.

We had two small papers, a self-made "learning plan", small amount of research to do for a discussion panel, 3 hours of a management/leadership class, and a 2 hour research class.

Alslo was taking a humanities class. It was fun:lol2:

I'm glad I got stuck doing my preceptorship at the beginning of senior year, rather than the end when I am crazy busy, as it is.

Hang in there and enjoy the learning!

Good luck!

Mine was probably an equivalent load. I think my instructor graded easier than usual though, fortunately :)

OP's preceptorship sounds like mine. 1 research project, a book-group assignment, the "10-lb care plan", and weekly mini-research papers. It's almost over though

We just had to write a daily journal and meet daily goals. We had to make sure that all our objectives were met by the end of the total hours put in. My biggest headache during my preceptorship was the preceptor that I was assigned to. She never had been a preceptor before or had oriented new grads. Needless to say we didn't have a good rapport. I ended up getting another preceptor mid way through the course.

Sounds about like our load. We also have a final to prepare for and the HESI. I feel more disorganized now than first quarter. Maybe I just had more energy and enthusiasm then, lol. Oh well, three more weeks!!!!

We worked a full time RN schedule (so - 3-4 12 hour shifts, be they day or night), a daily journal, one SOAP note per week, and two case presentations with a research article. These were presented at one 2 hour class per week.

DONE WITH THAT! Just 5 more shifts before graduation!

Gosh! I'm reading through these posts, and I don't know where I'd find time at during clinical to do all these extra projects! I had to take a full load of patients, do the Q2hr assessments, Q1hr vitals, teachings, all meds, interact with doctors (we weren't allowed to take verbal orders, so I'd have my preceptor around when I'd ask for stuff from Drs), and there were no techs so we had to bathe everybody as well. After the first couple of days, my preceptor would just check in on my every hour or so. I was able to even take a fresh open heart-although my preceptor was there for me for the first couple of hours after that pt arrived. I got to titrate drips as I needed, change vent setting to attempt a wean, all that good stuff. It ws great! We actually finish the semester and all the testing at the end of March, so the last part of nursing school is just working like a nurse. It's a great feeling, and now I just go into real nursing with a smooth transition.

Man there was a ton of charting!! I felt like that was the majority of my job! How do you guys find the time to do research projects? You are working full time and still attending class?
