FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

Published

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

Where can you find the info regarding conditions to enter the clinicals such as BLS, immunizations etc.? And do you know how soon in the program they start the clinicals? Thanks for the info.

Information about immunizations and BLS certification can be found here: Florida Atlantic University - Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing - Current Students

In previous years, clinicals started a few weeks into the first term. However, they have since extended the program by another semester (from 12 months to the now 15 month program). I don't think anyone knows yet how this will affect clinicals, but I believe the idea was to allow us more time and experience working under mock circumstances with the simulators before beginning clinicals.

I've been doing mine (CPR and BLS) for years with Diane Lea. She is in Boca and you can find her on the AHA website when you search for classes. She is absolutely great!

How much she charge?

cpr florida has a lot of times and some mixed with online as well.

It's was $35. I just looked her up again. It looks like she has four classes this month.

But I thought the only courses they have are. . .

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS: $65

OR

Healthcare Provider BLS (basic life support) online part 1 then take skills test: $22 online portion and $50 hand on skills session (only done a few times a month

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS: $65

That's what I paid for mine.

Hey! Qhat is this BLS stuff? Is it just for the accelerated program? If not do we have to do it before orientation?

The BLS (basic life support) course is required for all students. You learn CPR, proper use of an AED, and the Heimlich maneuver. Rather critical skills for any healthcare professional. I'm not certain, but I would guess you need to have this done at the very least by clinicals, but probably before the program begins. Best to do it now and have your certification done ahead of time than to wait until the last minute.

I took a CPR course recently that was through the AHA at Indian River State college. I learned how to do the Heimlich and the AED. Do you think that qualifies for the BLS?

I would assume it is the same thing haha
